MEET MELISSA RAMIREZ

New to the French Creek Family YMCA is Member Engagement Director Melissa Ramirez.  Melissa came to us from Toledo where she handled promotions for the local sports channel.

Originally from Lorain, Melissa is excited to return home and work with the YMCA to positively impact the surrounding community.

Melissa is a graduate of the University of Toledo, where she earned a degree in communications. She enjoys spending time with her husband Mike and her two kids, Xavier and Isabella.

MEET PAUL CONLEY

My name is Paul Conley and I am a member of the sports staff at the French Creek Family YMCA.  I was born and raised in East Palestine which is a small town south of Youngstown.  I graduated from Bowling Green State University in May of 2011 with a degree in Sport Management.  During the summer of 2012 I worked with Cleveland State basketball and helped run their summer basketball camps and fell in love with working with kids and in sports.  That love brought me to work with the YMCA.

Also, I am an Assistant Coach for Holy Name High School in Parma Heights, and would say that coaching s my favorite hobby.  I have always had a passion for playing and watching sports and love that I am able to work in sports at the Y.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

In January, we are re-structuring the wellness orientation process.

The process will be divided into a healthy lifestyle coaching component and a fitness orientation component. You can register for either at the wellness desk or front desk. This service is free, never expires, and can be used as many times as needed.

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Most of us watch the ball drop on New Year’s Eve and promise to lose weight, run a marathon, eat better, etc. At the Y we can help with all of those things, but we can also help you keep those resolutions that are a little less tangible, like reconnecting with your family.

One of our big goals for 2013 is to increase the amount of truly family-focused programming we offer. We have designed programming that allows the whole family to spend quality time interacting and participating together. Some of our most recent successes with this focus have been the Father/Daughter Dance, Family Boot  Camp, and Halloween at the Y, to name a few.

With the New Year fast approaching, we will be rolling out even more options that center around the family as a unit, not as a collection of individuals. Our mission at the Y is to build a strong community, and for us at French Creek, it begins with the family.

Additionally, our Mission Emphasis Committee has been hard at work and we will be hosting a Christian School Open House on Sunday February 10, 2013 from 1—4 p.m. at the French Creek Family YMCA.

Members of the YMCA and the community are invited and encouraged to come out and speak with a variety of different faith-based school representatives from our community.

What a great opportunity to check out your local school options all in one place.

Finally, connect with us by liking us on Facebook (French Creek Family YMCA).

MEMBERSHIP NEWS

Congratulations to the French Creek Family YMCA Swim Team for defeating the Orrville YMCA at the swim meet on November 15. The  team faces the Lake County East YMCA and the Ashtabula YMCA on Saturday, December 15 at 4:15 p.m.

The French Creek Family YMCA Swim Team has adopted a family for Christmas for the third  year in a row. All funds from their concession stand at November’s swim meet were contributions to a family in need within the branch. The team is excited to donate to the family and looks forward to helping adopt two families next year.

Winter I swim lesson registration opens December 26, 2012 and lessons will begin January 7. The sessions will run for five weeks.

CHILD CARE

As 2012 wraps up quickly, we look forward to a fun-filled new year jam-packed with memorable experiences, lifelong friendships while discovering new passions. Make sure to check in periodically with the child care staff with programming updates.

Don’t miss out on all of the fun this holiday season.

Be sure to register your child(ren) for one or all of the Fun Days here at the French Creek Y during their winter break.

It’s an entire day bursting with exciting activities that focus on having fun and staying active while learning all at the same time. Your child(ren) will partake in swimming and large motor activities on a daily basis with four field trips. More information to follow regarding the field trip destinations.

Fun Days will run from Friday, December 21 through Friday, January 4, 2013.

They begin at 7a.m. and close at 6 p.m. (with the exception of the holidays). Space is limited, reserve your child’s spot today.

YOUTH SPORTS

The Youth Sports Department at the French Creek YMCA has been keeping very busy over the last few months with our many youth sport activities.  On November 10, we began our basketball and volleyball leagues which had over 300 total participants ranging from 3-14 years in age.  We feel that the kids are having a great time playing these sports and will continue to enjoy themselves for the rest of the season.

Coming in January 2013 we will be starting our Jr. Cavs basketball league which is an eight-week basketball league that upon signing up gives each participant a Free Cavaliers ticket.

Along with basketball we will be running another volleyball league and we hope to continue the success of our current league.  Along with both leagues we will continue to offer our sport skill, fine art, and karate classes. In addition to the programs above we hope to have enough interest to offer adult leagues in 2013.

Finally, we would like to thank you for all that you do as members ensuring that our youth and sports leagues continually improve and focus on the core values of the YMCA.

We wish you and your family Happy Holidays.
