Geauga Family Y Fall 2011 Newsletter

Member Profile: Chesser Family

Last winter the Chesser family of Burton decided to improve their overall fitness and health.  Because the YMCA is a great value they became members as a family.  Father and mother Mark and Dana enjoy using the fitness center. Dana in particular, enjoys running on the treadmills.  Their children also participate in programs.  Son, Logan, is fond of the summer camp program and dodge-ball is one of his favorite activities.  Daughter, Faith enjoys the parent-child swim lessons.

As new members of the Geauga Family YMCA we are pleased to have them and look forward to helping them work towards their fitness goals.  Besides a desire to improve their overall health, Dana states that the affordability is outstanding.

Staff Profile: Andrea Pittones

The Geauga Family YMCA is pleased to have on staff Andrea Pitones, a new Wellness Director with the YMCA of Greater Cleveland.  Her tenure with the branch began in early June and she is responsible for wellness operations at our branch and the Hillcrest Family YMCA.

Responsibilities for Andrea also include facility maintenance and safety as it relates to health and wellness, development and implementation of programs and services and member engagement and retention.  She is excited about this new opportunity and looks forward to getting to know our members.

Prior to joining the YMCA Andrea was an elementary school teacher for four years and she holds a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies.  Beginning her career as a teacher is a perfect start for someone who spends time teaching fitness classes, proving personal training, and department oversight.  One of Andrea’s favorite quotes is, “you never know what you can do until you try,” Anonymous.

Andrea lives in the Hillcrest community with her husband and four children.  When not in service as her children’s personal taxi service she enjoys watching youth sport games.  If she just needs a little time for herself, Andrea can be seen chronicling her life by scrap booking or quilting.

Fall Youth Sports – New NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Program

Fall is a busy time for our youth programming and we have plenty to keep the whole family busy.  Starting in our September through October Fall I programming we are excited to be offering NFL Flag Football.  This will be our first year with the NFL Flag partnership.  Our skills classes will be continuing through the end of the year and we are excited to now be offering tennis in addition to our soccer, basketball, volleyball and t-ball classes.  Martial arts continues and includes classes for youth and adults.

Fall II and basketball season is fast approaching and will be starting back up at the end of October so be on the look out for registration. In preparation the Geauga Y will be holding a weekend basketball camp starting October 14 and running through October 16.  This weekend camp will be the perfect way to learn or improve on existing skills.

Finally, looking for something to do over the December Holiday break? The Geauga Family Y will be holding two special holiday sports camps.  Relive the summer camp fun in December.  These camps will include sports and fun themes with daily trips to the pool.  Please contact Mike Dutton, Program Director, for more information.  He can be reached at mdutton@clevelandymca.org.

Strong Kids Campaign

At the YMCA of Greater Cleveland, no one is turned away because of an inability to pay.  Through the generosity of donors, just like you, our annual Strong Kids Campaign provides membership and program scholarships for nearly 4,000 adults and children each year.  The Geauga Family YMCA provides over $60,000 in scholarships and your donation will directly benefit members of our community.  Please consider a donation to this program.

Alexandria Nichols, Branch Director

What a warm and pleasant summer. Well, except for those few scorchers in July.

I guess the warm weather kept people inside because we saw many of you in the branch.  Of those who visited us over the summer, many inquired about the new fitness equipment and we appreciate your patience.  We had an unexpected delay with the project because the carpet manufacturer was behind schedule so the project was pushed back about a month.  At first we were frustrated because we wanted to move forward but in the end, it gave us more time to plan the project.

With the additional planning time, we were able to solidify the project schedule with vendors and take a few extra steps to ensure the entire Association benefited from this project.  Due to the size of our fitness center we were able to provide equipment to West Shore, Lakewood, Downtown, Hillcrest and Euclid branches.  Southeast branch also will receive a few pieces of equipment from Hillcrest.

The additional time also gave us the opportunity to work towards donating some of the pieces fitness leaving Hillcrest and Euclid.  The Community Service Alliance, on the near west side, a transitional housing location for people reentering the community from correctional institutions, received several pieces from Hillcrest and Euclid.  Staff and residents were delighted at the kindness of our organization.

The YMCA as an organization is proud to provide services to those in need and we are proud to take care of our members as well as other social service organizations.  Sometimes we forget about the mission of the organization and this equipment project helps up to continue to develop youth, promote healthy living and be socially responsible.  The developing youth part may not seem that significant for our wellness center but there are several young athletes that spend time in our facility.   Hopefully they will continue their healthy lifestyle choices throughout their lives.  After all, habits we develop early in our lives often set the tone for our adult years.

To help non-members set a tone for healthy living, we will run our annual membership campaign which began August 22.  Please share this information with some friends who have thought about joining.  There are special rates for a short period of time and if you refer a friend for membership, you will receive a $25 discount on your future membership payments.  Help us promote our mission by sharing this information with your friends and family.  We want others to value us as much as you.

Most importantly, we hope that you have fun, safe, and healthy fall.  I always enjoy the fall colors and Geauga is magnificent with rolling hill and stunning foliage.
