Staff Profile: Christin Vernick
Our Wellness Coordinator, Andrea Pitones, was just promoted to the position of Health and Wellness Director for both the Geauga and Hillcrest branches. You will still see her here at Hillcrest, and she will still teach some of her regular classes, but her time at our branch will be reduced. We wish her well in this new endeavor!
Because of her promotion, the Hillcrest Y has brought on board a new Wellness Coordinator, Christin Vernick. At the age of 26, Christin comes to us with an undergraduate degree in exercise science from Baldwin-Wallace, and a graduate degree in physical education from Kent State in 2011.
Christin has three years of prior experience with various fitness clubs, though this will be her first time in a managerial position. She was also tapped during her undergrad studies to teach a variety of classes, including her favorite where she taught upcoming PE teachers how to teach fundamental skills such as ball throwing and handstands. “That was a fun class,” she recalls.
Though fitness is a big part of what she does, Christin has a variety of other interests, such as sewing, dance, football, and singing. Her newest, biggest interest comes in the form of obstacle racing. She competed in her first race in August, and is looking forward to the Warrior Dash (a rural obstacle course with streams, haybales and the like) in September.

Strong Kids Update
Every year the Hillcrest YMCA offers financial assistance to families who would like to maintain and improve their health but are unable to pay for a full YMCA membership. So far in 2011, the Hillcrest Y has given out over $30,000 to assist families, children and adults in accomplishing this goal.
We are currently in the middle of our fundraising campaign which will allow us to continue this financial assistance for 2012. We are seeking to raise $40,000. Every dollar which is raised at Hillcrest will stay here and be given out to our members. If you have not given to the Strong Kids Campaign yet, this year, please consider a $5, $25 or $500 donation. It will be money well-spent.
We’d also like to extend a special thank you to all our donors, sponsors, golfers and volunteers who helped make our summer Golf Outing a successful fundraiser for our Strong Kids Campaign. Together we raised over $7,000 in a hot but rewarding day at the StoneWater Golf Course.
If you’d like to join us in any capacity next year at our golf outing, please call 216-382-4300. We’ll be glad to have you!

Superior Soccer
The Hillcrest Family YMCA has teamed up with Superior Soccer Academy to bring you youth soccer classes and foot skills training. At each class they will work on the basics of soccer skills. The aspects of dribbling, passing, ball control, shooting and foot skills will all be worked on in a fun and engaging manner. There will be games and drills so kids won’t know they’re learning. Three different classes will be offered on Friday nights at the Hillcrest YMCA: 4-6 year-olds from 5 to 5:30 p.m. 7-10-year-olds from 5:30-6 p.m. and 11-14-year-olds from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Classes are $35 for YMCA Members and $50 for Program members. Please bring your own soccer ball to class.

Jeff Jacko, Director Hillcrest Branch

Summer camp is over. School has begun. While the seasons and leaves will be beginning their change soon, the Hillcrest YMCA has already begun a small series of changes within our facility.
Our most extensive change has been the arrival of upgraded fitness equipment. This came to us following a most generous gift from the Miller Family Charitable Trust, established by the late Paul and Kathryn Miller, who were members of the Geauga Family YMCA in Chardon. The Miller Family’s gift to the Geauga Family YMCA allowed our Greater Cleveland Association to buy out the lease on the current Geauga branch equipment, thus allowing old equipment at our Downtown, Euclid, Hillcrest, Southeast and West Park-Fairview branches to be upgraded to better serve our members at those branch locations.
Mostly, the newer equipment has replaced our old piece-for-piece, with a few additions, as well. And though the weight equipment looks perhaps a bit more intimidating, it works in similar ways that our old equipment did, and will still take care of the same muscle groups. We encourage you to make an appointment with one of our wellness coaches to familiarize yourself with these pieces.
The weight room and cycling room have also benefited from this upgrade, with the addition of dumbbells, weight benches, racks and five spin cycles.
We’ve also made our cycling room a more inviting place to work out with a simple paint makeover. If the black room and black lights used to put you off, please take a look into the room and maybe join our instructors for a class.
Changes come into our lives in so many different ways; here at the Hillcrest Y we’re trying to make ones that count. We hope the changes that come your way will bring you positive outcomes, as well.
