Lakewood Family YMCA Winter 2012 Newsletter

Staff Profile: Mary Cox

We are excited to introduce our new Lakewood Wellness Director and Corporate Wellness Director, Mary Cox.  Mary holds a doctorate in public health, a master’s degree in exercise physiology, and undergraduate degrees in therapeutic recreation and health education. In addition to her 17 years of experience in the health and wellness field, Mary brings great enthusiasm, energy, and passion to her work.

She joins the YMCA of Greater Cleveland from Health Promotions Inc. in Columbus Ohio, where she served as Senior Director of Corporative Health and Wellness Programs.  In addition to private corporative wellness experience, she has been a senior administrator for the overall direction and management of health and wellness programs at several universities.

Mary also has a strong background in grant writing and proven success in securing funds for health and wellness initiatives. She is extremely proud of the innovative and timely programs that she has developed in conjunction with grant acquisitions.

Mary is a native of Cleveland. Growing up in inner-city,  she credits the neighborhood YMCA for providing her with the mentorship to dream new and promising possibilities for her life. Those possibilities turned into a university track scholarship, where she became an international marathon runner, and earning advanced degrees in higher education.

Mary views her energy and passion for fitness, health, and wellness as the very fabric of her personal as well as professional persona. Please join us in warmly welcoming Mary to our YMCA family!

The end of the year is quickly approaching and it is with great joy that I share with you our major milestones and accomplishment. First and foremost we rejoice in informing our membership that this year was truly positive and productive in our program and service offerings. Family membership was up and as a result, our programming including adult fitness was near capacity.

We have successfully worked with the city of Lakewood and community partners to gain additional programming space and expand our role in community activities. Our volunteer advisory board members have been actively involved in fundraising and friend raising on behalf of the Lakewood YMCA and serve as a beacon of light to many of our staff and members. We have surveyed Child Watch parents, seeking their advice on potential new program offerings, and I urge anyone to please share with me or any staff a potential program that you feel could benefit our Lakewood YMCA. As always I am very pleased to serve you, our members.
