WELCOME TO OUR NEW PERSONAL TRAINERS

Please wish a warm welcome to our new trainers Kassidy Henderson, Joe Horvath, and Keven Stanowick.

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN

Thank you for helping us get 2013 off to a great start. The North Royalton Family Y has set a goal of $40,000, of which we have already raised $6,607.35 with 100% of our YMCA staff contributing to the cause. With your help, we can continue to provide the financial support needed to keep the Y accessible to everybody. Please stop by or call the front desk to inquire about how to donate to the Annual Campaign - 440-230-9339.

FLEXIBILITY TRAINING

Not all stretching is created equally. Some stretches are appropriate for limbering up before a workout, and others are meant for increasing flexibility and range of motion. Certain more involved stretching techniques are useful for promoting coordination and sports performance, and some stretching styles are designed to be done alone while others take advantage of a partner. This is a 20-minute session-- great for low back issues, athletes, and novice alike. Any of our personal training staff is available for this, and times can be set by appointment. Please inquire at the front desk to sign up.

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

As we get ready to leap into Spring, the North Royalton YMCA has become the focal point of the community in the seven month it has been open.  With many activities to do in and out of the YMCA, we are here to provide you with alternative healthy programs.

INTRODUCING THE DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM

Diabetes is a serious health condition that can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, high blood pressure, and blindness. Pre-diabetes is a reversible condition, and 79 million people in the United States are estimated to have it. If you have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, or believe you may be at risk for developing the disease, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you develop a healthier lifestyle and work with you to reduce the risks this condition can pose to your health.

Based on effective efforts researched by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program will help you learn about and adopt the healthy eating and physical activity habits that have been proven to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Through the 12 month lifestyle change program you will receive support and encouragement from both a trained lifestyle coach and fellow classmates as you develop a plan for improving and maintaining your overall well-being.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT:  JULIE HLAVATY

We are pleased to introduce this spring's employee spotlight, Julie Hlavaty.

A vital member of our Child Watch team, Julie has been a Y employee since we opened in June. A short conversation with Julie reveals her positive take on life, an attitude that may have something to do with her upbringing. Growing up in rural New Concord, her childhood was an experience of life on the farm. Her family's main trade was in raising dairy cows, though the land yielded a variety of veggies including sweet corn and potatoes while also helping to raise animals such as geese, peacocks, ducks, pigs, sheep, and horses. Between endless sky, farm life, and plenty of land and creek, you can imagine the type of adventure she experienced growing up. She also spoke of the kindness of strangers and the slow pace of life. Local farmers were never hesitant to pause their work and spare a moment to greet a stranger and share in conversation. People weren't going a thousand miles per hour to get from point A to point B.

Life in New Concord taught Julie a thing or two about the value of hard work while recognizing that life is better kept simple. Don't take yourself too seriously. Make sure to laugh. "You have to keep life light. It's too heavy."--an appropriate quote coming from a woman who explains that one of her greatest joys is making people laugh. This is one of many reasons why she loves her role at the Y: bringing laughter to the kids; interacting with parents and coworkers; playing a key role in maintaining a positive atmosphere.

While Julie values her time at the Y for the camaraderie, she also enjoys the opportunity for a healthier lifestyle. Starting in December, Julie made a decision to "Break away from the old excuses" and make time to get into shape. Before then her workout schedule was scattered--her new approach involves a minimum of 2 hours of cardio each day coupled with a free weights routine. She also enjoys variance to her workout routine through classes like Kickboxing and Ab Lab. As she maintains this motivation, she keeps this quote in mind from day to day: "I may not be there yet, but I'm closer than I was yesterday."

WHAT IS PREMIUM ZUMBA? PREMIUM CYCLING? PREMIUM BOOT CAMP?

Not your standard 60-minute classes--sign up for one of these five-week sessions of 90 minute Zumba, Cycling, or Boot camp classes and receive a 30 minute personal training session as well as an appointment to speak with a registered dietician. Call or stop by the front desk to sign up today.

BARRE CLASS

Now trending at the Y: BARRE. You'll do plenty of reps of small, pulsing movements (we're talking lifting and lowering limbs a mere inch or two), targeting the muscles in your core and big emphasis on form and alignment. This class is taught by Melody. Inquire at the front desk for more information.
