A MESSAGE FROM THE BRANCH DIRECTOR

In January and February at the Ridgewood Family YMCA, we had a tremendously successful membership campaign.  We would like to welcome all our new members with open arms.  We want all of you – new and long-term members alike – to feel welcome and a part of our family.  We’re proud to have been part of the Parma community since 1971, and are privileged to continue to have the opportunity to serve you.  If your not a member already, come and check out our Ridgewood Family YMCA and the new Ridgewood Studios located inside the Parmatown Mall.

Your YMCA membership gives you so much more than just a place to work out.  As a YMCA Member, you become part of our family and you have full use of our two Parma facilities and all we have to offer, including health and wellness programs, sports programs, and aquatics programs, senior activities, teen activities, family programs and opportunities to volunteer.

As I write this, we are in the midst of our 2013 Annual Campaign, which provides scholarship funding to those in need.  The YMCA does not turn anyone away because of the inability to pay.  If you would like to make a difference in a child’s life please go online to make a donation or stop by the front desk to see how you can help.

We would especially like to welcome all new seniors and SilverSneaker Members.  We hope you enjoy our land and water classes as well as a variety of senior seminars and bus trips.  Also look for our own Active Older Adults Coordinator, Jeanne Sutyak, to help put on The “Senior Showcase,” to be held this May at the nearby Donna Smallwood Activities Center, formerly the Parma Senior Center.

And coming up later this spring, the Ridgewood Family YMCA will once again offer the “Y-Splash,” the learn-to-swim water safety and education program, for which the YMCA of Greater Cleveland is known. This year’s program will take place in May.  This is a free water safety program offered over one weekend, which is geared especially toward children.

As always it is my pleasure to serve as your Branch Director.  Please call or e-mail me if there are ways I – or any of the Ridgewood Family YMCA staff can better serve you.

I can be reached at (440) 842-5200, or via e-mail.

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE

Youth Development.  Healthy Living. Social Responsibility.

As a cause-driven and mission-based organization, these areas of focus are central to our purpose.  But how do we develop youth, promote healthy living and be socially responsible when so many families are struggling to make ends meet, let alone have
discretionary income for YMCA memberships or programs?

The Answer: through our YMCA of Greater Cleveland Annual Campaign.

Through the Annual Campaign, the YMCA is able to help subsidize membership and program costs to members who want to participate in YMCA but may not be able to pay the full rate for programs, swim lessons, memberships, day camps and more.

To be able to offer this assistance, the Ridgewood Family YMCA relies on members, guests, local businesses and the entire community for donations.  All the money raised through the Annual Campaign stays right here in our community, and serves children and families in Parma, Parma Heights, Seven Hills, Brooklyn and North Royalton.

The Ridgewood Family YMCA and Ridgewood Studios do not turn anyone away because of the inability to pay.

There is a unique experience when you walk into the YMCA or participate in one of our programs such as swim lessons, group cycling and aerobics, karate, cheerleading, basketball, dance, dodge ball, and even gymnastics.  Through all of our programs we strive to help children develop valuable skills, gain confidence, build self-esteem and stay healthy.

Our 2013 Annual Campaign goal is $28,000, and to date we have raised $8,137, or approximately 29% of our total goal.

One hundred percent of your donation is tax deductible, and the funds will be used as you designate.  If you can make a donation, or know a business or community member who would be interested in helping make a positive impact on the Ridgewood Family YMCA and the communities we serve, please contact Tim Pinchek at the North Royalton Family YMCA at 440.230.9339, or via email.

INTRODUCING THE DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM Diabetes is a serious health condition that can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, high blood pressure, and blindness. Prediabetes is a potentially reversible condition, and 79 million people in the United States are estimated to have it. If you have been diagnosed with prediabetes, or believe you may be at risk for developing the disease, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you develop a healthier lifestyle and work with you to reduce the risks this condition can pose to your health.

Based on effective efforts researched by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program will help you learn about and adopt the healthy eating and physical activity habits that have been proven to reduce the risk of developing Type-2 diabetes.  Through the 12-month lifestyle change program you will receive support and encouragement from both a trained lifestyle coach and fellow classmates as you develop a plan for improving and maintaining your overall well-being.
