MEMBER PROFILE: Cherie Mann
Members who exercise regularly at our Y-Express inside Parmatown Mall location have probably encountered Cherie as she works one-on-one with our wellness staff. What they probably don’t know is what she deals with on a daily basis.
A YMCA member since 2001, Cherie fights her way through a laundry list of degenerative diseases, including Diabetes, Parkinson’s, Fibromyalgia, Myofibrillar Myopathy, Neck Extensor Myopathy, Peripheral Neuropathy, and many more.
Though she’s had a lot heaped on her shoulders, Cherie hasn’t given up. The Silver Sneakers member is in the Y-Express as often as she can be, working with the staff on everything she can physically do, usually under the watchful eye of the Y-Express wellness staff, including wellness director Chadi AbouHaidar.
“My personal motto is ‘don’t think about what you can’t do, but think about what you CAN do’,” she says. “So although I have pain, stiffness, slowness, balance, mobility, double vision, bladder, insomnia, fatigue, writing, speech and swallowing problems, I can still take photographs, sign in my church choir, help watch over my nieces and hopefully inspire other people.” |

It’s hard to believe that autumn is almost here when it seems like our Cleveland summer just began! I’m hoping this summer time has been happy and productive for you all.
The staff and I would like to thank all of our members in helping us grow as a YMCA Community. We are grateful for all that we have access to in this wonderful community, including the people who walk through our doors and take part in our lives every day.
We also recognize that there are many in our communities who are less fortunate and who need a helping hand. We are proud to fulfill that need, whether we are making financial assistance available, encouraging healthy lifestyle habits or promoting a service that no one else is providing. The YMCA offers programs that bring parents and children together, giving families a chance to strengthen relationships in a safe and caring environment. I hope each of you have the opportunity to experience this for yourself
One of the most important programs we have at our Y is the Scholarship Assistance Program. Our policy is to never turn anyone away for the inability to pay. The financial assistance is supported through generous donations to our annual Strong Kids Campaign. Everyone deserves a chance to participate in the YMCA and you will have the opportunity to make sure that continues through your own participation in the Strong Kids Campaign. Look for more information on the campaign this fall.
Your support of our annual Strong Kids Campaign makes financial assistance possible and subsidizes many of our programs. It allows us to reach out into the community with our character building and health-promotion programs. I’m particularly excited about the success of our summer camp program, in Parma and North Royalton that is providing healthy lifestyle curriculum for local kids this summer.
Again, thank you for being a member and helping us build an amazing YMCA community. Your support is much appreciated! | |
