MEET JACKIE PARKER:  MEMBER PROFILE

My name is Jackie Parker and I have a four year old daughter, Morgan, and triplets that will soon be three-years-old, Lucy, Brynn, and Paige.  I have been coming to the West Shore Family YMCA with them for over a year and it has become a part of our daily life that we all enjoy.  My girls can’t wait to go the child watch area while I work out because the teachers are always welcoming and engaging.  They paint pictures, play games, sing and dance.  The child  watch staff have gone above and beyond doing their jobs.  I truly feel like my children (and all the children attending) are very important to them.

Working out had always been an important part of my life before having children and I found it very hard to find time to work out after having triplets.  However, after joining the YMCA, I work out five times a week.  Being a stay at home mom,  I struggle to find fun things to do with my children during the winter months and this has been great.

Sometimes getting to the YMCA is the only outing we have all day.  It is also the only time I get to myself and I treasure it.  I get a chance to socialize and take my time working out.

The YMCA also runs many programs that my children enjoy and plan to continue to take part in.  My older daughter participated in a wonderful Tot Camp two days a week last year and all four will participated this year.  They just finished a tumbling class and will play soccer this summer.  All of the coaches, teachers and employees seem to enjoy helping children and other members.

My children also participated in the Fall Harvest Party, Breakfast with Santa and will enjoy the Parents Night Out when they get a bit older.  Joining the West Shore Family YMCA has been a blessing to my family and has helped me keep my sanity on many days as a Mom.

A MESSAGE FROM THE BRANCH DIRECTOR

My wife and I have been blessed lately with what has transpired in our lives.  I received the honor of taking over as the New Branch Director here at the West Shore Family YMCA at the end of December.  Also, my wife and I celebrated the birth of our first child in December and I have been off on parental leave.

Monday February 11 marked my first day back to work.

To give you a brief background, I have been in the Greater Cleveland Association for close to six years, but I have been in the YMCA movement since I was 19 and in college.  I began as an Adventure camp counselor at the YMCA in Warren County, Pennsylvania, my home town.  I fell in love with the YMCA and what it does and means to the community and its members.  I continued working there through my college years.  After graduating from college at Robert Morris University, I continued working, taking over the youth sports department, and remained until moving on to my first full-time job.

I did spend one year working outside of the YMCA at a drug and alcohol rehab facility.  In less than a year, that urge to get back to what I was doing with the YMCA got me and I looked to get back into the Y movement.  That brought me here to the Greater Cleveland Association, where I began as a Program Director at the newly rebuilt Lakewood Family YMCA.

Over time I advanced from a Program Director to a Regional Program Director at the Hillcrest Family YMCA in Lyndhurst,  where I helped oversee all sports programming for the east side branches as well as run the day-to-day operations of SELREC (South Euclid-Lyndhurst Recreation).  I then moved over to Bedford to serve as the Operations Director at the Southeast Family YMCA.

I am excited for the opportunity to be here at the West Shore Family YMCA because, not only is it a new challenge in my career, but also because of the tremendous staff here at West Shore.

I am dedicated to the West Shore Family YMCA and look forward to continuing to improve program quality as well as striving to increase the quantity of programs. Please remember that we are here to serve you and the community.  If there is a change you would like, please come see me at the branch, and feel free to share your ideas.  We do not know what you are looking for unless you tell us.  I look forward to getting to know you.

Thank you,

Paul Rogerson

AQUATICS NEWS

It has been a busy start to the year in aquatics here at the West Shore Family YMCA.

Swimming lessons are really hopping as our members get their children ready for a safe summer in our great community so close to the lake. Our water exercise classes are thriving and members are really enjoying our warm water in these cold months.

This year’s West Shore Family YMCA Swim Team, the Sea Turtles, had a great year.  This season there were 86 participants on the team.  We really appreciate the dedication and support of so many wonderful parent volunteers.  Those committed parents and coaches made the team’s annual Christmas Cadet Invitational meet a success again this year.

Swimming lessons are a great way to make sure your child is ready to have a safe summer.  Swimming is such an important skill for everyone, it can improve health, boost confidence, help to keep people safe and introduce you to new friends.  Consider signing up for a lesson today.  Spring sessions will run March 18 to April 28 and April 28 to June 9.

We are going to have a family event for Easter, called our “Easter Egg Dive.” This will be held on Saturday, March 23 and will be $3 each for members ($15 family max) and $5 each for program members ($25 family max). There will be games to play in the pool and eggs to dye.

Also keep an eye out for YSPLASH.

This is our annual free water safety and education event especially for children, which will be held in May.  Please look for more information coming soon.
