INTRODUCING THE DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM

Diabetes is a serious health condition that can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, high blood pressure, and blindness.

Prediabetes is a potentially reversible condition, and 79 million people in the United States are estimated to have it. If you have been diagnosed with prediabetes, or believe you may be at risk for developing the disease, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you develop a healthier lifestyle and work with you to reduce the risks this condition can pose to your health.

Based on effective efforts researched by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program will help you learn about and adopt the healthy eating and physical activity habits that have been proven to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.  Through the 12 month lifestyle change program you will receive support and encouragement from both a trained lifestyle coach and fellow classmates as you develop a plan for improving and maintaining your overall well-being.

A MESSAGE FROM BRANCH DIRECTOR
HEATHER DUCLOUX

Spring is in the air.  The promise of consistently warmer weather brings happy thoughts of longer days, relaxing over spring break, creating new Easter memories and preparation for summer activities (like Y Day Camp).

So far, in 2013, the West Park-Fairview Family YMCA has swung open the doors to welcome 117 new members to our family.  To our seasoned members, I want to say thank you for being courteous and introducing yourselves to our new participants.  I would like to invite new member to come and audition one of our safe and fun filled programs.   Whether it’s socializing after a SilverSneakers class in the morning, saving a life by registering for swimming lessons or looking for a new challenge in the Master’s Swim Class or the 5:40 a.m.  Boot Camp, I want to encourage you to explore.

As we enter the season of Lent, keep in mind that the Y is here to support you through your Lenten goals.  If you want to add good habits to your life, we can help.  Or if you are looking for a way to give back to the community, we can also assist with a variety of volunteer opportunities.  Think how the Y can support you and your family; we are always open to suggestions and feedback.

Have a happy and blessed spring season.

Heather DuCloux

Raised YTD: $5, 591

Percent of goal: 13.31%

MEMBER PROFILE:  MATT HAMMOND

We would like to recognize Matt Hammond for his participation in the Master Swim Team.  The reason Matt started this team is because he is training for a Triathlon.  Matt is a great guy who enjoys swimming with us every Tuesday and Thursday.

We have been working on stroke drills and kick drills to maximize the use of his pull and strength in his legs.  When Matt started, he was only able to swim 100 yards without stopping.  The skill workouts have helped him to progress to 800 yards.  Also, after completing the skill workout, Matt finishes the evening with completing a total of 2,000 yards that we swim in practice.  Matt has come along way in this class and I believe he will be ready for his Triathlon in a few months.

The Master Swim Team was started at West Park in 2012.  It is held on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per drop-in.  We have had many people jump-in for a good workout.  We hope to see you soon.
