The SS Jeremiah O’Brien, a decommissioned Liberty Ship that is moored in San Francisco’s
Fisherman's Wharf, offers an audio cell phone tour. It perfectly demonstrates how an audio tour can not only enhance the experience of its visitors, but raise funds and build relationships with local vendors.
To help cover its costs, the SS Jeremiah O'Brien has partnered with neighboring businesses. In exchange for a sponsorship, it is offering visitors discounts to bars, restaurants and local attractions. Visitors simply text in a promotional code and receive virtual coupons for sponsoring businesses.
"The Jeremiah O’Brien is a
historical museum ship. As such, we offer merchants the opportunity to sponsor
one of our 29 exhibits," said Dennis Koller, Executive Director of The National Liberty Ship Memorial, Inc. "The merchants love the idea because they get a chance
to direct market to a special target audience … ours. It’s a win-win-win for
everyone involved. The merchants win, the ship wins and our visitors win."
