"Optimism is Not False Hope,
It's a Strategy for Living"

Louis Rossetto; founder & former publisher Wired Magazine

A pessimistic business person will fail to inspire staff, colleagues and perhaps most importantly, customers. Bringing a positive attitude to what you do will raise your energy level and assure your efforts are more powerful and believable. In a Business Week article Carmine Gallo, communications coach for brands like Intel, Toshiba and Best Western, outlined 5 steps for developing optimistic habits.

1. Build on your strengths
Don't be afraid of setbacks, learn from them. Never consider them failures.

2. Radiate optimism
Demand that conversations focus on solutions, not on problems. Walk tall, give a strong hand shake and maintain eye contact with your listeners.

3. Speak highly of yourself, especially when talking to yourself
Do your own thoughts limit your potential? Work on telling yourself you can do something, not recalling all the reasons you can't.

4. Surround yourself with builders, not detractors
You are more likely to be successful if you spend your time with extraordinary people, who are probably better than you at certain skills. Learn from them.

5. Create magnificent obsessions
Think of those you admire. Do they dream big? If you're going to do something, do it with all you've got.

Inspiring leaders don't let negative headlines get them down - they use them to fuel their fire. Who would you rather have by your side? The person who buys into the doom and gloom or the one with eyes to opportunities in the future.

"Optimism is not false hope, it's a strategy for living. If you are optimistic about the future, you will step up and take responsibility and attempt to make it better for yourselves and your own children." - Louis Rossetto
