           MID-NOVEMBER 2015
Mid-November 2015
Happy November and Happy Thanksgiving!  We have so much for which to be Thankful - Great health, family, friends, and co-workers to name a few!  We at IIM are very grateful for each of you!  We love sharing our passion for holistic health of mind, body and Spirit!  Our theme this month is Advanced Gratitude ~ the perfect theme for Thanksgiving!  It's easy to be grateful when things are going well, but how do we continue to develop gratitude when things are difficult or disappointing?  See my Health Tip to learn more on developing Advanced Gratitude.

As a token of my appreciation for each of you and the stand that you take to create your optimal health, I am offering you each one free book from the following choices (while they last!) the next time we see you here at IIM:
Getting Well: Mind, Body and Spirit; Your Better Body - The Woman's Guide to Holistic Health & Wellness; The Coaching Gurus; and The Women's Book of Empowerment & Confidence: 365 Daily Affirmations.

Thanks too, to all of you who wrote me in response to my additional Health Tip about thyroid medication management.  It is so rewarding to know that through our dialogue the learning continues... for this I am grateful!

November is typically open enrollment for health insurance policies.  Even though we do not participate with third party insurers, you may use Health Care Savings accounts (HSA) or Flex spending accounts to pay for our services.  Check your options for health insurance plans.  You may want to opt in for a Health care savings account or flex spending account if this is an option.  These accounts not only cover our office visits but also supplements, nutraceuticals and homeopathics as long as I write a prescription for them (which I am happy to do!).

Join us for our Holiday Trunk Show on Wednesday, December 2nd from 5:30-8:30 PM.  Come and shop for the holidays!  Friends of IIM will be showcasing items from all around the world such as jewelry, purses, stones and other unique gifts that are perfect for the Holidays!

We have our full array of continuing classes in Feldenkrais, Yamuna, Yoga and Friday Evening Meditation.  Join us this month!

Enjoy this month of Thanksgiving and use it to intentionally develop Advanced Gratitude!

What is C-IMT?
C-IMT or Carotid-Intima Media Thickness assessment is an easy and painless procedure now available to you.  C-IMT is without risk or side effects and is more predictive than any other screening available.  For decades ultrasound has helped physicians "see" developments and problems inside people's bodies.  Combining ultrasound images with recent computer software advancements, we can measure and analyze critical regions inside our blood vessels like never before.  Measuring the C-IMT allows us to take a literal snapshot of a person's vascular health.  This analysis is sophisticated enough to assess your individual risk.  It can detect the early stages of heart disease, even in teenagers.

Now you can take a proactive approach and be screened for cardiovascular abnormalities quickly, conveniently and inexpensively.  If detected early, Cardiovascular disease can be prevented.

Make your health a priority.  $150 includes consult with Kim Evans.  FSA/HSA eligible expenses.  Schedule your visit for Thursday, December 17th!

Wednesday Wellness Hour - December 9, December 23

A native of Louisville, Kentucky, I am a practicing Orthopedic Surgeon who is most interested in this day and age in what I call whole human healing.  It is estimated that about 70% of ailments that afflict people in our society are related to the effects of chronic stress and other imbalances in the mind-body (or body-mind) connection.  My passion is to aid people in relieving pain, suffering, and other forms of physical, mental, and emotional discomfort in life in effective, authentic, and lasting ways."

" I discovered meditation during a tumultuous time in my own life, and have been fortunate to have studied or been on retreat experiences with many of today's most relevant teachers.  Additionally, I am currently completing a PhD in Mind-Body Medicine.  I have had the pleasure of teaching mindfulness and meditation to a wide range of students, and aided many people suffering from a variety of conditions and symptoms to make profound gains in their conditions and rediscover joy and peace in their lives.  The journey has been nothing short of amazing."

"I am passionate about what I do, and believe that all who are willing to explore self-healing can benefit in transformative ways.  My style is to distill a wide body of information and experience into a simple and easily applicable set of concepts and practices that anyone can easily assimilate and use.  I am, at heart, a pragmatist.  For me, it's about offering people something they can readily and meaningfully apply within the context of the lives they are currently living (which is the only place any of it ever really works or makes sense anyway).  I warmly welcome anyone, regardless of experience or knowledge level, to any of my classes or sessions."

Advanced Integrative Therapy ~ Certified Therapist & Teacher
a 3-Day Seminar for Graduate Level Mental Health Clinicians and Graduate Students who are currently in a supervised clinical placement
This 3-Day Seminar is a prerequisite for all other AIT Seminars.   AIT BASICS provides everything you need to know to begin using AIT in your practice immediately.  Call Cynthia with questions, or for more information.

Advanced Integrative Therapy or AIT, is a dynamic and new in-depth energy psychology that begins from the premise that ALL upsetting events are traumas and are lodged within the body, mind and spirit.  Talking gives us insight into our issues, but often does too little to remove them.  AIT removes the energy within us that is made up of our particular responses to the incidents and patterns that hurt or upset us throughout our lives.  The healing is gentle, effective and complete... promoting psychological, physical and spiritual healing by treating not just the symptoms, but the originating causes of present day difficulties that fracture human wholeness.

AIT integrates the best established and proven psychotherapies, and then adds a new energy psychology element that is body-based. This simply and gently addresses and clears those aspects of the issue in the body, mind, and spirit.  In this way, the issue gets completely resolved!

Incorporate AIT into your therapeutic practice!

IIM Practitioner of the Month

Kim Evans
Institute for Integrative Medicine

A hands on/hi-tech approach to healing mind, body & spirit

Meet Kim Evans...

This month I am the designated Practitioner of the Month.  It's very fitting that my month is November as I am so grateful for every step of my journey.  As I reflect on how the Institute for Integrative Medicine came into being, I am filled with awe and appreciation.  I have been blessed to have many incredible teachers along the way!

It all started in 1996.  I still remember the epiphany I had standing in the middle of the intensive care unit realizing that so many of the patients had illnesses that could have been prevented.  That's when it hit me that we really don't do "health care" in this country.  Instead we do disease care - we wait until you get sick and then try to fix what ails you.  I made a commitment at that moment and asked God to help me change the healthcare system - even if it was one patient at a time.

Since then I've had one Divine Intervention after another.  First, the New York College of Holistic Health Education and Research created a traveling program to teach nurses how to do Amma therapy.  Guess where they taught the first program?  Louisville, KY!!  As I learned Amma therapy, I began my first company, which was named "Healing Matters" and I worked out of Louisville Cardiology.  They allowed me to use a room for Amma therapy and I agreed to teach their cardiac rehabilitation nutrition course.  In 2000, I had the great fortune to open the Institute for Integrative Medicine with 3 other colleagues - Dr. Slava Paskovich, Eddie Campomanes, and Amber Stone.  We worked with each other for 3 years, after which they each moved on to other adventures.

It was in that transition phase that I had one of the most incredible turning points in my career.  I attended a conference in Hawaii sponsored by the American College of Cardiology on Integrative Medicine in Cardiology.  It was there that I met Pam McDonald and Dr. Andrew Weil.  Pam is a nurse practitioner and she instantly became my friend and colleague.  She taught me all about the APO E gene diet and encouraged me to create a cardiovascular disease management program (which, with the help of Kimberly May and Dr. Clifford Kuhn, became "Intentional Wellness").  Andrew Weil shared about his fellowship program that he created in Integrative Medicine for physicians and nurse practitioners (which I subsequently did in 2005-2006).

I moved IIM to Baxter Avenue in 2003 and worked with Bobbi Brooks for 7 years.  She had worked directly with Hanna Kroeger who had begun the first herbal store in the country in Boulder, Co.  Bobbi is a master herbalist, energy practitioner and one of the most intuitive people I've ever met.  I continue to this day to learn so much from her.  In 2010, I knew God was calling me to a greater vision for IIM.  For 18 months, I looked for a new office space that would accomodate my growing vision.  I found our current location and invited several amazing practitioners to join, and we moved into our current location on 10/10/10.

Our services have grown far beyond even what I had imagined.  It has truly become the Institute for Integrative Medicine.  I am ever so grateful.  Thanks to all of you who have believed in us and have had the courage and commitment to transform your health of mind, body and Spirit!

"Gratitude is a sacred space where you allow and know that a force greater than your ego is always at work and always available."  "Be in a state of gratitude for everything that shows up in your life.  Be thankful for the storms as well as the smooth sailing.  What is the lesson or gift in what you are experiencing right now?  Find your joy not in what's missing in your life but in how you can serve."                                   ~ Wayne Dyer

National Gratitude Month ~November, 2015
"Gratitude is more than simply saying "thank you."  Gratitude's amazing powers have the ability to shift us from focusing on the negative to appreciating what is positive in our lives.  Practicing daily gratitude gives us a deeper connection to ourselves, the world around us and to our Creator."

"Everything in our lives has the ability to improve when we are grateful.  Research has shown that gratitude can enhance our moods, decrease stress and drastically improve our overall level of health and wellbeing.  On average grateful people tend to have fewer stress related illnesses and experience less depression and lowered blood pressure, they are more physically fit, they are happier..."

"If everyone practiced daily gratitude, we could change ourselves and the planet for the better.  What are you waiting for?  Give gratitude a try!  You'll be happier you did!"

"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.  It turns what we have into enough, and more.
It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity.
It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.
Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow."
