Kim Evans ~ Staying healthy in these challenging times!

Hello everyone!
Here are some thoughts and facts on Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Coronavirus has now become pandemic.  Here are some facts to help you keep things in perspective.  As of 3/12/2020, the number of cases worldwide are 126,000 with 4,600 deaths (3.6%).  Most of the confirmed cases and deaths are in China.  On the worst day, China had 108 deaths.  However, to help keep this in perspective, there were also 26, 283 people who died of cancer, 24,841 who died of heart disease, and 4,300 who died from diabetes complications.  81% of the cases are mild and 14% are moderate.  Only 4-5% of cases are severe enough to require hospitalization.  If you are less than 50 years old and healthy, your chances of contracting the coronavirus is 1 in 45 million.  This is not to imply that we shouldn't be  concerned by the virus, but perhaps we can feel reassured by these facts.

At the same time, this virus spreads rapidly and many people do not even know that they have it which further escalates its rapid spread.  Despite the low number (4-5%) that have typically required hospitalization (usually elderly persons or those with a compromised immune system), when this happens all at once, there are not enough hospital beds to accommodate these patients.  This is what happened in Northern Italy.  They have had 15,113 cases with 1,266 deaths.  Their healthcare resources including hospital beds, healthcare staff, and supplies (ventilators, masks, etc.) have been exhausted.  This is why they have warned other countries worldwide to do everything they can to slow the spread and limit the peak outbreaks of the virus (in other words, "flatten the curve") so that hospitals and healthcare personnel can manage the numbers of critically ill patients.

There are now 1,311 confirmed cases in the U.S. and 38 people have died (3%).  You may think that closing the schools and universities, cancelling public events, etc. is extreme.  Most of you know that I am a huge college basketball fan and was greatly disappointed to hear that the NCAA cancelled all the March Madness tournaments.  However, if these measures can potentially prevent 1,000 deaths of the elderly, medically fragile and healthcare workers, then it's worth it.  In retrospect, it will be a small price to pay.  We will only know with hindsight whether these measures were appropriate, too aggressive, or not aggressive enough.  (In this year of 2020 - perfect vision - I find it interesting that hindsight will be our "perfect vision").

What can you do to prevent the spread of this disease?
First, do not go into fear or upset.  Use common sense.  Wash your hands frequently throughout the day with antibacterial soap.  Use hand sanitizer liberally. Be mindful when you find yourself around those who have coughs or sneezes, or also if you are spending time with elderly persons or those who are medically fragile.

 Take extra care of yourself

This illustration, created at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), reveals ultrastructural morphology exhibited by coronaviruses.  Note the spikes that adorn the outer surface of the virus, which impart the look of a corona surrounding the virion, when viewed electron microscopically.  A novel coronavirus, named Severe Acute3 Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2 was identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China in 2019.  The illness caused by this virus has been named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
