Hello

The Practitioners at the Institute for Integrative Medicine look forward to seeing you soon!

NOTE from KIM EVANS -  April 2015

Welcome to April! Hello Sunshine!  Hello Spring!  I don't know about you but I am so grateful to see the sun and welcome warmer temperatures!  I was beginning to think the sun was a "foreign object in the sky."  This is one of my favorite times of year.  I love watching the flowers spring up from nowhere and the grasses grow to a vibrant green.  Our robin has returned to the nest she built last year under our upper deck.  Hopefully we'll get to watch her have her babies again this year.  Such miracles all around us!  Take time to appreciate it all!

This month is National Humor Month!  Be sure to check out the live Health Tip Video on Humor and the Health Tip section to see how you can increase your humor appreciation.  Well at least laugh a bit more!  This health tip is heavily influenced by our dear colleague, Dr. Clifford Kuhn, who has studied humor and positive emotions for over 30 years.  We greatly appreciate all he has taught and shared with us through the years.

Our practitioner of the month is Jerry Scott.  He continues to expand his knowledge and experience of natural health.  He recently completed the ISHA Inner Engineering program, which he said has given him an inner calmness and peace.  He is currently enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition program and is excited to share what he is learning about nutrition.  He's even changed some of his own dietary habits!

There are lots of wonderful events this month.  Be sure to check out the Save The Date page to learn more about the sneak preview of the new film:  PlantPure Nation!  Also, this is the month for Give A Day - The Mayor's Week of Service (April 18th-26th) here in Louisville.  There are classes and workshops and chances to create the habit of healthy living this spring...

Hope you can join us this month.  If you can't join us this month, at least make a commitment to adding the practice of healthy humor to your daily life.  You'll be glad you did!

Love,
Kim

Welcome to April - National Humor Month.

Our tip this month is Humor - for the health of it!
Did you know that an infant naturally laughs nearly 200 times per day but as adults we have to make sure we get 10-15 laughs in a day.  We've got to lighten up and bring more humor appreciation into our daily lives.
We've been blessed over the last few years to work with Dr. Clifford Kuhn.  He's known here in town as the "Laugh Doctor".  He's done over 30 years of research on laughter and positive emotions.

He reminds us of the many benefits to humor:
*First, humor reduces stress.
*Second, humor can relieve pain.  Norman Cousins first documented how ten minutes of belly slapping laughter generated 2 hours of no pain during his illness.
*Third, humor increases your creativity.  Humor stimulates both the left and right side of the brain which results in higher creativity.
*Fourth, humor bolsters morale.  Shared humor among colleagues makes the work place much more fun and enjoyable.

What can you do to increase your humor appreciation?
*First, hang around funny people.
*Second, take time to read the comics or download the "joke of the day" on your phone.
*Third, smile often.  Even a smirk or smile generates the same positive benefits as a laugh.

Remember - as Dr. Kuhn reminds us, always 'go the extra Smile"!

These few tips will do your body good! and keep you celebrating Humor for the health of it all month long...
Dr. Kuhn's book:  It All Starts with a Smile7 Steps to Being Happier Right Now is available at IIM.
Check out Dr. Clifford Kuhn, the Laugh Doctor, and more about "going the extra Smile" with this link:  http://www.drcliffordkuhn.com

Dr. Robin Youngson will be at IIM Wednesday, April 22, 6:00-8:00 PM

Dr. Robin Youngson, creator of the movement, "Hearts in Healthcare" is coming back to Louisville!  Dr. Youngson is the author of "Time to Care:  How to Love your Patients and your Job."  He has created the "Health in Happiness" organization and has chosen Louisville to be the international headquarters.  He and his wife, Meredith, will be here for 6 weeks to explore the possibility of creating a space for the Happiness in Healthcare organization and to continue to nurture the seeds previously planted in Louisville to bring more happiness to healthcare.  He acknowledges the high degree of frustration, burn out, cynicism and negativity rampant in healthcare today.  He is committed to supporting all providers (and teachers) to help them reclaim the happiness and joy of healthcare.  Watch future newsletters and education flyers for upcoming events.  Do you want to become part of this movement?  Are you interested in helping support Dr. Youngson in this mission?  Check out this link, which states how you can help.

The Hildegard House ~ 114 Adams Street ~ Dr. Karen Cassidy
I am excited to share news of a new nonprofit organization here in town who truly models the "I've Got Your Back" concept.  This is the Hildegard House, which was started by my colleague, Dr. Karen Cassidy.  The house is located at 114 Adams Street and provides in home care for the dying in our community who have no living family members.  With the help of the community and volunteers, the Hildegard House provides emotional, spiritual, and social support for a dying person who otherwise has nothing.  The services at Hildegard House are designed to help support the quality of living throughout the dying process.  They acknowledge that every moment matters and strive to provide a home setting with comfort and support while respecting the dignity of every resident.
Every resident has access to a hospice team, a nurse, a nurse's aide, a social worker and a chaplain.  Meals, housekeeping and companionship are a part of their home setting at the Hildegard House.  They are currently renovating the house and are expecting to open their doors to clients by this fall.  I often wondered what terminally ill people do who have no family support.  Now there is an answer for them!
For more information on their support services or how you might be able to engage your time and talent in helping them offer these services, contact Dr. Karen Cassidy at 502-797-7411 or via email at karencass56@gmail.com

Join Kim Evans... for
An Evening with Dr. Robin Youngson
"How to Bring Care and Happiness Back into Healthcare!"

Wednesday, April 22nd ~ 6:00-8:00 PM
at Institute for Integrative Medicine

Dr. Robin Youngson, a physician from New Zealand is in town for 6 weeks.  He is the author of "Time to Care:  How to Love Your Patients and Your Job."
He has started an international movement to bring Happiness in Healthcare.  He has chosen Louisville as the place to create the International Center.  He has graciously offered to come to IIM and lead us in a discussion on " How to bring Care and Happiness back into Healthcare!"  Here is what Dr. Youngson has to say:   "There's an epidemic of burnout among health professionals and the sad fact is that burnt-out nurses, doctors and therapists are severely compromised in their ability to provide compassionate patient care.  Emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation rob us of our human caring.  But we've learned from many health professions around the world that it's possible to find ways to be happy and joyful in our work again."

Come join us as we re-ignite the passion of why we chose healing health professions.  Be inspired and re-energized by heartfelt stories of compassion in healthcare.  Be part of the movement to bring "Happiness in Healthcare" to the forefront of all our healthcare institutions, creating a transformational shift for both patients and providers!
