NOTE from KIM EVANS -  March 2015

Welcome to March!  Let's hope we are over the deep freeze conditions of the last few weeks!  Personally I am ready for warmer temperatures and more sunshine!  Our theme this month is " You Are What You Eat (and Drink)!"  This is certainly true.  Literally what we eat and drink becomes our body chemistry.  This theme was chosen since March is National Nutrition Month.  Be sure to check out our video health tip of the month that addresses healthy nutrition!

Betty Greaver is our Practitioner of the Month.  She has become quite an expert in healthy nutrition, completing her certification through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition last year.

There are lots of exciting events this month.  The Organic Association of KY will be holding their 5th annual conference on March 6-7th at the Paroquet Springs Conference Center in Shepherdsville, KY.  They are sponsoring a consumer tract this year on Saturday, March 7th.  I will be presenting " Pure and Simple:  Is organic food better for you?" at 10:00 AM there.  See further details on our Save The Date! page below.  I am also presenting " Holistic Eating:  How to eat for Health, Vitality and Energy" at our office on Wednesday, March 25th.  Healthy eating is one major component of wellness.

Hope you can join us this month.  If you can't join us this month, at least make a commitment to eating healthy.  You'll be glad you did!  Try it for one month and see what you notice in your own health and well being!

Welcome to March - National Nutrition Month.
You've heard the adage - You are what you eat.  This is true in regards to nutrition.  At the IIM, we advocate the Perfect Gene diet.  This diet is a balanced diet of healthy carbohydrates, fats and proteins with an emphasis on fruits and vegetables.  We know that when you consume a diet high in processed foods, sugar (found in many unhealthy carbohydrates), and hydrogenated oils (unhealthy fats), this leads to inflammation and diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke or cancers.  In the early 1900's, the average American consumed about 5 pounds per year of sugar.  Now the average American consumes between 150-170 pounds of sugar which has no nutritional value.  Just a for instance - there's over 55 teaspoons of sugar in a 2 liter soft drink.  Our food systems have changed dramatically over the last 30-40 years.  Previously Americans consumed minimal amounts of processed foods and chemicals.  Now for many Americans, processed foods comprise about 70% of their diet.

We like to encourage Michael Pollan's food rules:
1.  Eat mostly plants - if it came from a plant, eat it, if it was made in a plant, don't.
2.  Don't eat anything with more than 5 ingredients in it.
3.  Don't eat anything that has ingredients you can't pronouce.
4.  Don't eat anything your Great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food.

Kim's rules:
1.  Eat all 3 macronutrients - protein, carbohydrates and fat.
2.  Eat organic when possible.
3.  Avoid high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup solids.
4.  Avoid unhealthy fats - hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils.

These few tips will do your body good! and keep you healthy!

Check out Michael Pollan and more about his "food rules":

IIM Practitioner of the Month:
~Betty Greaver ~ Healing Health Concepts

Betty Greaver, RN, LMT - Healing Health Concepts
~ "Specializing in Touch, Health and Wellness!"
Holistic Health Coach & Educator, Massage Therapist, Breast Health Consultant

Practitioner of the Month for March:   Greetings! Happy Spring, almost!  I love March for many reasons... I love the promise of spring.  I love the breeze and the wind.  I love seeing new growth and color.  And it's my birthday month!

Collaborative Practitioner at IIM:   After graduating from Spalding University with my RN, BSN, I worked in many areas of nursing including CCU, Pulmonary Rehab, and as a Certified Rehab Nurse at Frazier Rehab for over 20 years.  I have been blessed to be part of the Institute for Integrative Medicine since 11/11/11.  It is such an honor and a privilege to work with so many like-minded individuals.  In this supportive and collaborative "home", I continue to pursue my holistic nursing, health coach, and massage therapy practices.  My colleague, Kristi Forrest, and I have started a Healing Touch Support & Share Community that meets the final Monday evening of each month at IIM.  Please join us!

Current Focus:   My focus for my career and education is on detoxification for body, mind and spirit.  I have enjoyed teaching meditation for KyOne Health patients in their Healthy Lifestyle Centers and for my own private clients.  As a Breast Health Advocate, much emphasis is placed on detoxification for the body.  As a Health Coach, emphasis is on clean, real food for detoxification.  I continue to do massage, and I am currently a student practitioner of Healing Touch for detoxification of the body.  I am  passionate about helping others lead a better, cleaner life, decreasing risks of chronic disease and increasing compassion and peace.

Nutrition Health Coach:  I graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in July of 2013.  I'm enjoying being a health coach, with many of my clients wanting information on gluten-free and food intolerace challenges.  Being a Nutrition Health Coach is an exciting way for me to express my passion for helping people.
Feel free to contact  me this month ~ we'll explore your health and nutrition!

"I look forward to meeting with you and helping you get on the path to better health!" ~ Betty

ARE YOU A HEALTHCARE PROVIDER?  If so, we would like to personally invite you to our "Self Care 4 Health Care!" Event.
We understand the stressors of working in all facets of health care. The stress of insurance changes, less reimbursement and electronic medical records have pushed many providers into frustration, overwhelm, compassion fatigue and burnout.  We would like to honor you and all you've contributed to health care by treating you to a night of stress management and optimal wellness just for YOU!

Please join us on Wednesday, April 1st from 5:30-8:30 PM
IIM ~ 205 Townepark Circle, Suite 100, Louisville, KY  40243

Dr. Robin Youngson, creator of the movement, "Hearts in Healthcare" is returning to Louisville for 6 weeks beginning in April.  He and his wife, Meredith, want to gift Louisville with their expertise, passion and commitment to help create an International Center for Happiness in Healthcare here in Louisville.  They've offered to assist in building a community-wide commitment to promote greater Health and Happiness for our health professionals and educators!  Dr. Youngson wants to continue his exploration with key community leaders, including Mayor Greg Fischer.  It's long been recognized among health care providers that delivering compassionate care is not possible if we are not compassionate toward ourselves, and each other.  Do you want to become part of this movement to spread compassion in healthcare?  Are you interested in helping support Dr. Youngson in this mission?  Check out this link, which states how you can help.
Watch our future newsletters for more information on Dr. Youngson's upcoming trip to the Ville!

Thanks to each of you who are joining in our on-going challenge to be able to say "I've Got Your Back..."
If you have a story that you would like to share, please send it to me.   ~ Kim Evans

Save Your Face this Yamuna Body Rolling technique will impact the bones of the face, releasing stress patterns, restoring balance and increasing mental awareness and a sense of well-being.  Helpful also for the sinuses, releasing TMJ stress patterns and relieving puffiness... see an instant brightness in your face!

Save Your Wrists and Shoulders:
is designed to release the impact on the hands, wrists and shoulders.  Today more than ever we have repetitive movements of these muscle chains.  Whether you work with your hands like a surgeon, massage therapist,  or hair stylist, or you spend untold amounts of time on the computer,  you are slowly causing contractions of these muscles.  This translates up the chain from hands, wrists, arms, shoulders to the neck and head.  By learning how to release this repetitive stress you increase flexibility and alignment and decrease constriction and pain.

The practice of Yamuna is a great way to begin listening to your body.  It is a stress free way to start positive dialog between your mind and your body, increasing your body awareness and sustainability.  Using specially designed Yamuna balls you can find relief from pain... and the hope and possibility of healing while lessening the wear and tear on the body and promoting sustainability.
