 Move Your Body Joyfully!
Greetings & Notes from KIM EVANS - May 2015

Welcome to May!  Our theme this month is " Move Your Body Joyfully!"  Warmer temperatures are finally here!  It's tempting to get outside, go all out and restart your outdoor exercise program just where you left off last summer!  But be careful!  Your outdoor exercise might involve different muscle groups than your winter exercise routine.  Remember to begin with stretching and a five minute warm-up.  Check out the Health Tip of the Month to learn more on the benefits of exercise.

Angie Megibben, our Yoga Teacher, is our Practitioner of the Month.  She has certainly impacted all of us in our ability to move our bodies joyfully and gracefully.  In honor of " Move Your Body Joyfully" month, Kimberly will debut her first Nia class.  This is a wonderful, fun way to move your body.  Imagine a cardio-dance workout based on your body's own ability to move and stretch.

Dr. Robin Youngson continues to be in town sharing his wisdom and heart on how to bring more joy into healthcare.  He will be doing a presentation on Saturday, May 9th with KentuckyOne Health.  It's a free event.  Find out further details in the Save-the-Date section of this newsletter.  Norton Healthcare is also having their 2nd annual Integrative Medicine Symposium on Thursday, May 21st.

May is also Mother's Day, graduations, and National Nurse's Week (May 6-12th)!  Once again, lots going on in "the Ville!"  Enjoy moving your body!

Move Your Body Joyfully!
If there was a pill that had the same many benefits as exercise, it would be the top selling pharmaceutical on the market.

There are so many benefits of exercise - I'll name a few.

First, exercise improves your cardiovascular status.  Your heart will love you for
      exercising.

Second, exercise reduces stress by helping to move the tension out of the body.

Third, exercise produces endorphins.  These are the "feel good" molecules which
improve your mood and well being
.

Fourth, exercise will help control your weight to a healthy range.

Fifth, you will notice more energy.

Sixth, your sleep will be improved.

Consider the "FITT" principle for exercise.

The "F" stands for frequency.  Exercise 4-6 days per week or at least 5 hours per week.

The "I" stands for intensity.  You want the intensity to be such that you reach your target
heart rate when you exercise.  This can easily be calculated by taking 220 minus your
age.  Your target heart rate is 60-85% of this number.  If I take 220 minus my age, that
equals 162.  60-85% of that means that I want my exercise heart rate to reach 97-138.

The first "T" is time.  Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, or 5 hours per week.

The last "T" is type.  It's good to do a variety of exercise - stretching, strength training,
yoga, and aerobic exercise such as walking, jogging, swimming, biking or tennis.

At IIM we offer many different exercises ~ ways to move your body joyfully:
Yoga, Yamuna, Feldenkrais, and our latest, Nia.  Come join us!

IIM PRACTITIONER OF THE MONTH ~ MAY 2015
IIM Practitioner of the Month:
Angie Megibben ~ Light Works Yoga ~ "mind-body-spirit"
502.321.0557
www.light-works-yoga.com
www.integrativemedicine4u.com

Happy Move Your Body Joyfully Month!  Did you know that it is impossible to separate physical health from mental and spiritual well-being?  Research over the last several decades reveals that mental and spiritual health definitively affects physical health.  Thankfully, our abilities to scientifically validate these findings only reflect what yoga has been teaching us for almost 6,000 years and that is:  work with the breath and move the body joyfully to calm the "monkey mind," and you will find peace in your heart!  Here at Light Works Yoga Studio, it is my goal to help people, through movement and breathing, "re"member that their bodies, minds and spirits are connected at the deepest of levels.  When each aspect is in balance with the other two, then we can know true well-being and wholeness.  Namaste!

Angie Megibben is the owner of Light Works Yoga.  Angie was raised in a family of athletes, went on to get her M.Ed., then Yoga Certified through Jimmy Barkan Hot Yoga in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.  Drawing on a lifetime of experience with movement and education, she now teaches Yoga to all ages as a way to improve your life.  Because of her own experience with medical issues, Angie knows how much Yoga can offer the human body, and as a teacher she hopes to show others how to alleviate pain, stress, illness, or anything else to help the Mind, Body, and Spirit.

What classes does Light Works Yoga offer?   We offer four different yoga programs designed specifically to improve strength, flexibility, and tranquility.  We offer classes in "Core Strengthening," "Restorative Yoga," "Gentle Yoga," and "Spine Health."  We also offer a class specifically for people living with Parkinson's, as well as a class specifically for people living with Fibromyalgia.
We hope you'll join us soon!

I'VE GOT YOUR BACK! ~ MAY 2015
I've Got Your Back & Fab Results at IIM ~ May 2015

Dr. Robin Youngson and his wife Meredith continue to be in town, all the way from New Zealand!  They are dedicated to making Louisville the International Center for the "Happiness in Healthcare" movement and to continue the efforts of the Healthcare Constellation of Compassionate Louisville initially spearheaded by Mayor Greg Fischer.  Last Friday, April 24th, Dr. Youngson, Mary Corbett and myself attended the annual meeting of the Ky Coalition of Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Midwives (KCNPCM) to present a resolution declaring KCNPNM "A Compassionate Organization of Health Care Providers."  It was passed unanimously!

The Healthcare Constellation of Compassionate Louisville invites you to an opportunity to join Dr. Robin Youngson, Co-Founder of Hearts In Healthcare, author of " Time to Care:  How to Love Your Patients and Your Job," in a conversation around questions:  What if Compassion were the driving force in healthcare?  What would bring you more joy in your work?  What would it look like?  What would be possible?

This is a rare opportunity to remind yourself why you are working in healthcare and voice your opinion on what you need to bring back the joy!

Location:  The Loft, 107 Crescent Avenue, Louisville, KY (small white house, off of the corner of Crescent & Frankfort, parking available in office lot next door)
RSVP:  partners101.lisa@gmail.com  or  jaamagn01@gmail.com  or call 502.396.0279

Celebrate the women in your life!

"Mother's Day is observed the second Sunday in May.  It is a time to honor mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers for their contribution to family and society."
A little history... "Mother's Day originated from mainly two women, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis. Julia Ward sponsored Mother's Day each year in Boston around 1870 to promote pacifism and disarmament with women.  It lasted about 10 years.  Anna Jarvis organized the first Mother's Day in Grafton, West Virginia at St. Andrews Methodist Church in 1908."
