Greetings & Notes from KIM EVANS - APRIL 2016
Welcome to April!  The sun is shining and the birds are singing!  We are starting one of the most beautiful times of the year.  Our theme this month is "Lighten Up!" in honor of National Humor MonthAfter the long winter, April is the perfect time to "Lighten up."  The light of the day lasts a little longer which can help lift our moods and attitudes.  Set your intention this year to consciously celebrate National Humor Month.  Laugh at least 10-15 times per day.  Read the comics, spend time with people who make you laugh or download a humorous app on your phone to make sure you are getting these minimal laughs in daily.  When you set the intention to laugh and increase your humor appreciation, you will be amazed at how many more funny things will happen right around you!

Jerry Scott is our Practitioner of the Month
We are proud to announce his completion and new certification as a health coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.  Way to go Jerry!

Once again, we have a full month of classes and activities.  Come and join us!

Kim Evans

"Laugh as much as possible, always laugh.  It's the sweetest thing one can do for oneself and one's fellow human beings."

What is C-IMT?
C-IMT or Carotid-Intima Media Thickness assessment is an easy and painless procedure now available to you.  C-IMT is without risk or side effects and is more predictive than any other screening available.  For decades ultrasound has helped physicians "see" developments and problems inside people's bodies.  Combining ultrasound images with recent computer software advancements, we can measure and analyze critical regions inside our blood vessels like never before.  Measuring the C-IMT allows us to take a literal snapshot of a person's vascular health.  This analysis is sophisticated enough to assess your individual risk.  It can detect the early stages of heart disease, even in teenagers.

Now you can take a proactive approach and be screened for cardiovascular abnormalities quickly, conveniently and inexpensively.  If detected early, Cardiovascular disease can be prevented.

Make your health a priority.  $165 includes consult with Kim Evans.  FSA/HSA eligible expenses.  Schedule your visit for Thursday, April 14th!  502.253.4554

What we're reading this month:
It All Starts with a Smile - 7 Steps to Being Happier Right Now
by Clifford Kuhn, MD - the Laugh Doctor

~ This is perfect for this month!  "Laughter and the positive emotions laughter generates...have been found to boost the immune system, stabilize blood pressure, massage inner organs, stimulate circulation, and increase the flow of oxygen to the muscles, thereby decreasing tension.  How, then, do we go about generating more laughter in our lives?  How can people maintain a sense of humor when they are fearful or depressed, anxious, physically uncomfortable, over worked, in pain, or uncertain about the future?  I have an answer- my HA HA HA Prescription, a three-phase formula for unleashing the marvelous healing power of your humor nature in every situation."
~ It All Starts with a Smile - 7 Steps to Being Happier Right Now is available for purchase at IIM!

Health Tip:
  Lighten Up!

Welcome to April - Our theme this month is "Lighten up!" in honor of National Humor Month.
We can look at this a couple ways - one is to bring more joy and humor into our daily lives and not take ourselves so seriously.  This can add undue pressure when we're so serious all the time.  Another perspective is the quote - "Lighten up and Fly with your Angels."  I love this.  Even if we're experiencing difficulties, we can know and trust angelic guidance.  My colleague, Bobbi Brooks used to say that there were legions of angels all ready to help us.  They will not violate our free will however - We've got to ask for help!

Kim:  I'm here with my colleague, Jerry and whenever you ask him how he is, he has one answer - "All is Well!" - no matter what is going on around him.  Let's find out more from Jerry how he uses the "all is well" mantra to "Lighten up!"

Jerry:  I find that anytime I'm stressed I can simply think of my grandchildren who bring me much joy and happiness.

The other perspective is "Lighten up and Fly with the Angels" knowing that there are legions of angels always there to help us.  Let's find out more from Joy (Perfect name for this month!) about her experiences and angels who showed up sometimes as strangers to come to her aid.

Joy:  Several years ago while working for the wildlife and rescue organization, I was canoeing on a cool, very cloudy overcast Spring morning to monitor the geese habitat.  Suddenly I saw one and grabbed my camera to take a picture.  In the process, I capsized the canoe.  I was able to right the canoe but began shaking violently from hypothermia.  Suddenly a sunbeam came from behind the clouds and shone right on me and I began to warm immediately.  Still shaking, I stripped off all the wet clothes and scurried to gather my belongings from the lake.  A fisherman appeared from down the lake and helped me gather my belongings and help me into my truck to warm up and avoid further hypothermia.  As I warmed, I thought, "I need to thank that fisherman."  I got out to thank him but he was nowhere to be seen.  He was certainly an angel.

Kim:  So remember - Lighten up! - bring more joy and humor into your life and remember in times of difficulty, Lighten up and Fly with your Angels!  Ask them for help - they are always there for you!  If you need help lightening up or bringing more joy and humor into your life, give us a call!

Additional Health Tip!
Lighten Up!  Practice the "Smile Strategies..."

"Your natural aptitude for humor springs forth effortlessly when you practice heart-first strategies every day.  Every strategy focuses on a different aspect of your natural aptitude for creating fun.  Each will introduce you to a mindset that will encourage your humor nature to be active and strong, allowing you to unleash the full power of your positive energy... If you practice the smile strategies enough, you'll soon find that they become a part of your life."
~ excerpt from It All Starts with a Smile ~ Seven Steps to Being Happier Right Now
by Clifford Kuhn, MD - the Laugh Doctor

Here are just a few of the 52 strategies Dr. Kuhn proposes! With their "reminder" questions...

Always go the extra smile.  ~  Am I smiling right now?
Laugh with yourself.  ~  How would I look or sound right now on Candid Camera?
Expect the unexpected.  ~  Who will surprise me today and how will it happen?
Celebrate everything.  ~  Where will I find the pony in today's "manure?"
Believe it before you see it.  ~  What do I want to see happen today?
Find the ray of hope.  ~  What possible benefits will I discover in today's "dark cloud?"
See the world through the eyes of a child.  ~  How would a nine-year-old child see this situation?
Stand on your head.  ~  What would this situation look like upside down or reversed?
Start with your heart.  ~  Am I keeping my heart open to new people and experiences today?
Be constantly curious.  ~  What's under this rock?
Exaggerate and minimize.  ~  Would it help to exaggerate or minimize how I feel right now?
Enjoy the game.  ~  If I'm already having fun, what do I care about keeping score?
Conduct a laughter symphony.  ~  What kind of concert will the laughter symphony play for me today?

We hope this will help you with your commitment to Lighten Up! this month...

 I've Got Your Back ~ April * 2016

I'm very excited to highlight a recent patient, Kelly.
She is 46 and first came to see me in 2014.  Her primary reason for coming was an intermittent issue of cervical dysplasia that began appearing sporadically on her Pap smears since 2007.  This had caused her ongoing conscious and unconscious concerns.  She also had some mild gastrointestinal complaints including a lot of bloating after meals and some excess gas.

I explained that 75% of the immune system is in the gastrointestinal tract and how issues in the GI tract can lead to inflammatory changes, intestinal permeability, immune compromise and even auto-immune illnesses years down the road.
She agreed to test the Cyrex Array 3 and 4, which will show if the body is producing antibodies toward particular foods, indicating leaky gut (intestinal permeability) and a reaction / sensitivity to that food.  She had pretty much been avoiding gluten but I wanted to make sure she did not have any lingering wheat or gluten antibodies.

Her results showed that she was very reactive to buckwheat, sorghum, amaranth, quinoa, tapioca, teff, soy, corn and potato.  She eliminated all these foods from her diet, took a high dose probiotic and Panplex digestive enzyme to assist the body in breaking down and assimilating nutrients from her food.  Kelly expressed to me that understanding why it was important to avoid trigger foods really helped her follow the course.  She appreciated knowing the value of making changes, because when she faced a choice in what to eat, she immediately connected the foods to her vision of life-long vital health.  She also continued her active path of working with energy medicine.

When she went to her GYN appointment 9 months later, her PAP smear and exam were normal with no evidence of the cervical dysplagia.  Each time she came back to our office for her appointments, her vitality and level of healthiness increased.

I retested her Cyrex Array 4 this past February and was excited to see that she did not have antibodies to ANY of the foods to which she previously reacted.  She has no further gas or bloating.  She continues on a daily probiotic and occasional digestive enzyme.  Way to go Kelly!
Thanks to each of you who are joining in our on-going challenge to be able to say "I've Got Your Back..."  If you have a story that you would like to share, please send it to me.  ~ Kim Evans

           Monday, April 25th ~ 6:30-8:00 PM

                                                               The Eye Deal!
Improve your vision, improve your movement
Our eyes guide our movements.  We look... then turn, move, reach toward what we want.
Yet we can develop habits and unnecessary efforts that interfere with the ease of our vision, and the quality and clarity of our vision can degrade.  Chapter 6 of Norman Doidge's best selling book, The Brain's Way of Healing is dedicated to one man's remarkable journey of regaining much of his lost vision by working with the principles of the Feldenkrais Method.  In this playshop, we will explore some basic Feldenkrais exercises developed for the eyes.  When we improve our eyes, our visual acuity, we improve our movement -- our flexibility, coordination and balance.  Working with the eyes can also be helpful for headaches and other pain.  Join us for a focus on the eyes!

In this playshop you will be verbally led through gentle exercises based on the Feldenkrais Method.  Many of the exercises will be on a mat on the floor.  Please let us know if it is difficult for you to get onto the floor and we can make arrangements for you to be able to participate.
