           OCTOBER 2016

It's OK to look back - just don't stare!
Greetings & Notes from KIM EVANS - OCTOBER 2016
It's October!  A new season is emerging!  The days are beginning to shorten, the air is crisper, and the leaves are displaying their wonderful artistry of fall colors.  Nature beckons us to slow down a bit, relax and appreciate her shift.  Awww..... Take time to enjoy these gifts from Mother Nature!

Our theme this month is "It's OK to look back, just don't stare."  (Many thanks to my cousin, Anita, for this great quote!)  Of course we can all learn from past experiences, choices and decisions, but we don't want to get stuck in the drama of yesterday.  Look back, but don't stare!  See our Health Tip of the Month for more on this theme!

This month, Dorothy Henning, who is Certified in Feldenkrais, is our Practitioner of the Month.  If you've never had a Feldenkrais treatment, plan to have one this month!  It's wonderful therapy.  After she worked with me, I had perfect posture WITH NO EFFORT.  Usually I have to concentrate on holding my shoulders up and back in order to have good posture.  I was very impressed.  You can also join in on her Friday morning group class at 10:30 here at IIM! Or try her October Feldenkrais Playshop focusing on Hamstrings! here at IIM on the evening of October 24th...

What we're reading now:

The Brain's Way of Healing: Remarkable Discoveries and Recoveries from the Frontiers of Neuroplasticity  By Norman Doidge, MD

Neuroplasticity! is the latest buzzword.
"The capacity & potential for the brain to heal and change itself at all ages and in any circumstances."

This remarkable book details - through compelling and dramatic personal histories, including two chapters about Moshe Feldenkrais and the application of the Feldenkrais Method of somatic education - the miraculous phenomenon of neuroplastic healing in action.
There is compelling support for the Feldenkrais Method - convincingly showing both the process and the results, and how the practice develops the very aspects of the brain that will enhance its self-healing.
An excerpt of Chapter 5 can be read at this site:
Check out Norman Doidge's website:

"Life is divided into three terms -
that which was, which is, and which will be.
Let us learn from the past to profit by the present, to live better in the future."
                               ~ William Wordsworth

Health Tip:

Welcome to October!

It's OK to look back - just don't stare!

Our theme this month is "It's OK to look back - just don't stare!"  Isn't that great advice?  This quote comes from my cousin Anita.  It's OK to look back at past experiences or past choices you've made.  But you just don't want to get caught or stuck in the past.  As the late Wayne Dyer used to say, "The past is nothing more than a trail you've left behind.  What drives your life today is the energy that you bring in each and every present moment."  Sometimes past feelings, emotions or experiences can create cellular memory that literally gets stuck in our physical bodies.

Dorothy Henning, who is a practitioner here at the Institute for Integrative Medicine, is an expert in Feldenkrais.  This therapy can help you identify areas where you are holding tension or have patterns of un-ease.  By using the brain's innate healing ability, she'll help you move freely and easily so nothing is stuck in your physical body.

So remember, "It's OK to look back - just don't stare!"  If you need help dealing with past emotions and feelings that seem to be getting the best of you, give us a call.  We can help you through this so you can "look back, but not stare!"

Meet Dorothy Henning...

Dorothy Henning, a Louisville native, is excited to be living in her home town after living and practicing the Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education in Strasbourg, France since 2004.  Dorothy also has a French National diploma in Sports Education from Strasbourg, France.  While in France, she worked with high level athletes as well as collaborated with the Ludica Center, working with stroke and brain trauma victims to aid in their functional recovery.

Why the name "Feldenkrais"?  The Feldenkrais Method is named after Moshe Feldenkrais, an Israeli physicist, who developed the method as a means to improve after his own injuries rather than having knee surgery.  Applying the principals of physics, martial arts, and human development and learning, he taught himself to re-use his legs with ease and without pain.  He then began working with others, writing, teaching and developing the method.

The Feldenkrais Method, is this for me? Does your back hurt, or do you have chronic pain?  Or would you like to enhance recovery from an injury even though it seems you've reached your limit of improvement?  Are you an athlete or dancer who would like to extend your potential?  Or would you just like to have better posture, less pain, and breathe and move more easily, feeling embodied, calm, focused and self-aware?  Then give this method a try, you may be surprised by the results!

How do I do it?  The method is taught in two forms, in group classes known as Awareness Through Movement and in individual hands-on sessions known as Functional Integration sessions.  Please stop by and try a class at IIM on Friday mornings at 10:30 AM...
Special Offer:  During the month of October, newcomers can try one class free!

Contact Dorothy for more information, or to schedule an appointment -
"I believe that the unity of mind and body is an objective reality.  They are not just parts somehow related to each other, but an inseperable whole while functioning.  A brain without a body could not think."    Moshe Feldenkrais

 I've Got Your Back ~ October * 2016

This month I want to share Wendy's story.
She is a beautiful young woman who first came to IIM in October 2015.  She complained of significant, progressively worsening fatigue.  She told me she felt like on any day she could lay her head on her desk and fall asleep. (Not the normal energy I would expect in a 34 year old!)  She brought me labs that were completed by her primary care physician, which revealed an elevated cholesterol level with triglycerides of 245 (normal should be less than 100).  She had gained 12 pounds in the last year despite aggressively working out at the gym.

First she did a detox with Ultra Clear Plus and took a high dose probiotic daily.  She agreed to eliminate all wheat and gluten from her diet.  She also agreed to take a small dose of Armour Thyroid twice daily.
Three weeks later, she returned and had lost 1.6 pounds of fluid.  She looked like she was 5-10 pounds lighter.  She said she felt much less bloated.

Next we addressed two other health concerns.  She was having a recurring headache the night before she started her menstrual cycle each month.  In addition to cleaning up her diet by avoiding processed foods and only using organic versions of the top GMO foods (corn, canola, soy and sugar), she also started on Indoplex, which helps to metabolize estrogen normally.  She also agreed to take fish oil for her cholesterol.

Last month, I repeated her labs and was so excited with her progress.  Her total cholesterol is now 183 (down from 233) and her Triglycerides are down to 98 (from 246)!  Her thyroid labs are normal and she feels so much better than she did last year!
Way to go Wendy!!

Thanks to each of you who are joining in our on-going challenge to be able to say "I've Got Your Back..."  If you have a story that you would like to share, please send it to me.  ~ Kim Evans
