Walk a mile in their shoes!

Greetings & Notes from KIM EVANS - SEPTEMBER 2017!

Welcome to September!  Here we are coming into ANOTHER season already!  September is an extraordinary time of year - we get to enjoy cooler temperatures, a crispness in the air and the splendid miracle of colors from Mother Nature.  Take advantage and intentionally connect with Nature this month - even if you must schedule this time in your calendar - DO IT!  A recent article in Reader's Digest (April, 2017) titled:  "The Nature Cure," by Florence Henderson (originally published in National Geographic - January, 2016), discusses how being in Nature allows the prefrontal cortex of the brain to rest and recover, like an overused muscle.

Our theme this month is " Walk a mile in their shoes!".  This is a great reminder to be more compassionate and understanding of others by imagining what life looks like from another's perspective - ie. walking in their shoes.  Our heart might be touched in ways we never expected.  September is Pain Awareness Month so we would like to focus on reducing your pain - whether physical, psychological, emotional, Spiritual, energetic or intellectual so you can achieve your optimal health of mind, body and Spirit.

Reverend Yvonne McCoy is our Practitioner of the Month.
Yvonne is a powerful anointed healer who has an incredible gift of helping people reduce their pain, regardless of the root cause.  I've witnessed how she can shift dis-EASE in people, thus allowing access for Divine miracles of healing to unfold.

We have several exciting opportunities this month:
1.  Yamuna Bone Health Study group - We are continuing to meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from 6:00 - 7:30 PM.

2.  Healthy Lifestyles Group - kicks off for the fall on Tuesday, September 12th!  Wellness Coaching Specialist Kimberly May will be leading this opportunity for you to create a wellness vision for your life & get the support you need to live this vision. Betty Greaver, RN & Health Coach, will co-coordinate.
Contact Kimberly May: inspirewell@gmail.com  502.593.9017

3.  Effigy Breath work - will kick off a monthly series beginning on Monday, September 18, 6:30-7:30 PM. This class will then be held on the 3rd Monday of October, November and December.  breathelouisville@gmail.com

4.  Are you interested in healing your own prejudice and bigotry by " Walking a mile in their shoes?"  We are planning a showing of "The Crusade of Connor Stephens" with a group discussion afterwards.  This will be streamlined simultaneously in Macon, Georgia with a virtual discussion afterwards led by Dr. Suzanne Menarcine (entrepreneur nurse, business woman, and one of only 8000 pilots in the country who are female!).
Friday, September 15: gather from 5:45-6:00 PM / Pot luck dinner 6:00-7:00 / Film at 7:00 / Discussion to follow
RSVP:  IIM 502.253.4554  info@integrativemedicine4u.com

5.  Victoria Hayden is back!  She will resume her monthly meditations on the 2nd Monday of the month beginning September 11th, 6:30-8:00 PM.  Contact Victoria: vlhayden1@gmail.com

So as you enjoy the shift in Nature this month, shift your consciousness by
"Walking a mile in their shoes!"

Love,
Kim Evans

IIM HEALTH TIP OF THE MONTH ~ SEPTEMBER * 2017

Health Tip
Walk a mile in their shoes!

Kim Evans:
Welcome to September.  Our theme this month is "Walk a mile in THEIR shoes!"  September is Pain Awareness Month so this month we would like to focus on how we can support anyone who is in pain - whether it's physical pain, pychological/emotional pain or Spiritual pain.  One way to do that is to understand what it is like to "Walk in THEIR shoes."  Yvonne McCoy is going to share more about that.

Yvonne McCoy:
Walk in their shoes!  This means that before we criticize or judge another, we should put ourselves in their situation to see how we would feel if we were in their position.  Hurting People Hurt People.  If someone lashes out at us, we should resist the temptation to respond back with hurtful words.  So often, that person might be fighting against their own natural feelings of hurt or rejection.  We should respond with compassion and love.  Don't respond back when you are angry or upset.  A good practice is to Think before you speak.  Consider what is about to come out of your mouth before you let it slip past.  Think about how it would make you feel to hear the words.  If you still feel it needs to be said, perhaps the better option is waiting until you're not so hurt and angry to say it.

Kim:  My husband always says - You don't have to take back what you don't say!  This has been a good principle for me to live by.

Yvonne:  Allow People to own their feelings and emotions without becoming resentful or holding grudges.
When we hold onto grudges, it really only hurts us.  Bitterness and resentments left unattended can actually manifest itself in the form of physical pain and ailments.  Rather, forgive those who have lashed out at you.  Forgiveness is for you rather than the other person.  "Holding onto anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; yet you are the one getting burnt." ~ Buddha
Accept That Things will Happen, Say I'm Sorry, and Move On.   There will probably always be a time we will slip up and lash out.  At that point, don't beat yourself up over it.  It will not help you or the other person.  Take responsibility for your actions, apologize sincerely (because if they matter, you truly will be sorry) and keep moving forward.
Compliments go a long way when walking in one's shoes.  Look for the good in others and tell them when you see it.  Sincereity is the key in giving a genuine compliment.  It is a powerful way of showing someone you care.  Receiving a compliment gracefully, with pride and appreciation (not laughing it off or becoming embarrassed), takes practice.  Start practicing today.
Work towards Healing (Mind, Body, Soul and Spirit).  Hurting people hurt people, however healed people heal people.  If you work on your issues and work towards healing (whether it's by simply accepting it and moving on, or seeing a therapist or other holistic healer) you will then be able to go out into the world and spread that good energy that comes from you being healed.

Kim:  So if you need help resolving your own issues, dropping your judgements or expanding your capacity for compassion so you can walk in their shoes, give us a call.

BONUS Health Tip
:

The Hope Quotient: Measure It. Raise It. You'll Never Be the Same.

Kim Evans:
Recently a patient told me about the book, The Hope Quotient by Pastor Ray Johnston.  Feeling hopeful literally creates a physiologic response.  Different neurotransmitters are produced with hope than with fear or dread.  Paster Johnston demonstrates that small things can make a dramatic difference in your life.  He offers 7 principles to escalate your Hope Quotient.  These are excellent and perfect for our Bonus Health Tip!

1.  Recharge Your Batteries ~ Nobody does well running on empty.

2.  Raise Your Expectations ~ You don't get what you deserve; you get what you expect.

3.  Refocus on the Future ~ It's time to throw away your rearview mirror.  No one goes forward well when they are looking back.

4.  Play to Your Strengths ~ Be yourself; everyone else is taken.

5.  Refuse to Go It Alone ~ Never underestimate the power of support.  Even the Lone Ranger had Tonto.

6.  Replace Burnout with Balance ~ Burning the candle at both ends isn't as bright as you think.

7.  Play Great Defense ~ Avoid these five toxic hope killers than can threaten your future:  Bitterness & resentment; Worry & anxiety; Looking back & comparing; Guilt; Past failures.

When you have hope, 11 things are unleashed in your life:
You have more satisfying relationships, you're more productive, you're less affected by stress, you're more successful, you're more satisfied, you're more compassionate, you're more willing to help people in need, you're physically healthier, you hold yourself to higher moral and ethical standards, you're more likely to assume leadership, you're more likely to see God as loving, caring, and forgiving.
When you have genuine hope - not trite, pious platitudes but authentic hope that produces inner strength and confidence - anything is possible.   ~ Ray Johnston

I'VE GOT YOUR BACK ~ SEPTEMBER * 2017

I've Got Your Back ~ September * 2017

This month I'd like to highlight Sarah.  She is 65 and came to see me this past February.  She has a history of fibromyalgia, degenerative disc issues, chronic migraines, and hypothyroidism.  She does a lot to take care of herself and to help manage her chronic conditions - such as acupuncture, Gentle Yoga and Feldenkrias therapy.  Her diet is healthy, with minimal processed foods and minimal to no sugar.

I tested her Array 4 which revealed a sensitivity to quinoa.  We recommended that she avoid all quinoa.  I also checked her thyroid labs.  She was taking Armour thyroid which has the advantage of including both T3 and T4.  However, her labs revealed that she had a bit too much T3.  So I decreased her Armour dose and added a small amount of T4 (Levothyroxine).

She came in earlier this month and said she couldn't believe how much better she felt having her thyroid medication adjusted.  She said she no longer experienced a drop in her energy level in the afternoon and was even cooking dinner more consistently.  She noticed more hair growth on her head and eyebrows.

The ratio of T3/T4 in the Armour Thyroid is adequate in many cases.  However, occasionally it's necessary to tweak slightly with either a bit more T3 or T4.  One size does not always fit all - Every person is unique!

SAVE THE DATE! The Havening Techniques Training - November 10-12th

Introduction Training for the Havening Techniques
for removing trauma, stress and stuck emotions
November 10, 11, 12 - 2017

Havening is a powerful technique that effectively clears trauma that has become encoded in our nervous system.  When a trauma occurs, pathways become encoded in our nervous system.  Subsequent triggers stimulate the same pathway resulting in the fear, trauma, panic and negative emotions associated with the original traumatic event.  Havening Techniques help to break the encoding of that pathway.  You may have a memory of the traumatic event but it will no longer trigger the intense emotional reactions.

At IIM, both Kimberly May (502.593.9017) and Kim Evans (502.253.4554) have trained in The Havening Techniques.
