The Sendai Tanabata Festival in Miyagi Prefecture boasts colourful, handmade streamers and a large fireworks display. Born from a story of star-crossed lovers, the Tanabata festival (usually held on the seventh day of the seventh month) celebrates annual reunion of Princess Orihime (Vega) and cow-herding Hikoboshi (Altair). Tanabata is celebrated nationwide, however the Sendai Tanabata Festival is said to be one of the biggest in Japan and is held from 6 to 8 August.

Japan Rail Pass updates

On 26 July, the Japan Rail Group as well as the individual JR companies announced further information relating to upcoming price changes for the nationwide Japan Rail Pass as well as regional passes offered by each individual company.

(*Note: The Japan Rail Group includes 6 independent rail companies: JR Hokkaido, JR East, JR Central, JR West, JR Shikoku and JR Kyushu.)

The price change for the nationwide Japan Rail Pass (known as the JR Pass) as well as the individual regional passes will go into effect for sales from 01 October 2023.

Passes may be purchased a maximum of 3 months prior to the first date of use, so passes purchased by 30 September 2023 (at the current price) must be activated by end December 2023.
(*Our understanding is that a pass purchased on 30 September must be activated by 29 December; for usage on or after 30 Dec you would need to purchase the pass on or after 01 October).

From 01 October, JR Pass holders will be able to use Nozomi and Mizuho trains on the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen routes if they purchase a designated ticket. Details about this system will be published on the Japan Rail Pass website in September.

JR Pass holders will also be eligible for discounts at tourist facilities from 01 Oct, and further details on this will also be published on the Japan Rail Pass website in September.

As of 27 July, the above information has been published in Japanese only, in a press release on the Japan Rail Pass website. English information is expected soon. This is all of the information that we have available at this time so please note that we cannot answer detailed questions about the changes to the JR Pass.

From festivals to fireworks, Japan in August is full of festivities and celebrations. This guide gives you the insider tips for travel in the Japanese summer and ideas on places to visit, as well as popular pastimes.

Considered one of the most stunning events in the Tohoku region, the Aomori Nebuta Festival parades giant paper-mache dolls, accompanied by taiko drummers, lutes, hand cymbal players, and hundreds of dancers.

Have a turn at catching flowing somen noodles. In this fun culinary activity, water flows down bamboo shoots, carrying bundles of somen noodles for you to catch with your chopsticks. Enjoy this unique outdoor dining experience on your next summer trip to Japan.

You may know Hokkaido for its excellent powder snow in winter, but in summer it’s known as a get-away from the sweltering Japanese heat. With its refreshing temperatures, you can also enjoy the fireworks in Obihiro.

When it comes to surfing, Miyazaki is not a destination to miss. With surf schools opening, even surfing novices can enjoy the swell at the beach. Enjoy a beer and burger at the local Aoshima Beach Park after a long day of catching waves.

Eat like a local and dine at one of Japan's many food stalls, serving delicious skewers, and plenty of drinks! Fukuoka could be your next destination to experience yatai culture, as food stalls are an integral part of the Fukuoka food scene.

Don't miss out on one of Japan's most well-known festivals. This festival turns the city of Kyoto into a grand parade, where huge floats are displayed and marched through the streets.
