The Biei area of Hokkaido is known for its rolling hills and colourful flower fields. Lupines are among some of the first summer flowers to bloom in June each year, and are particularly striking as the surrounding landscapes are still mostly green at this time.

Hi ,

The first sakura season since Japan reopened its borders has all but wrapped up and brought with it an exciting update. As of 29 April 2023 the Japanese government has now lifted all remaining border control measures, so travellers are no longer required to provide proof of vaccine status or a negative PCR test for entry into the country. Travellers are still encouraged to register immigration and customs information on Visit Japan Web to expedite airport arrival procedures.

This month’s newsletter is full of inspiration for discovering lesser-known areas of Japan, whether that be as a side trip from popular destinations such as Kyoto or Mt Fuji, or on a road trip in a campervan. Read on to find out more.

A stop in Kyoto is on most visitors’ Japan bucket list for good reason, but many never venture beyond the city centre. Consider heading off the beaten track to explore picturesque port towns, landscapes with mythological connections and more.

Did you know you can still go skiing in Japan in spring and even summer? Mt Gassan in Yamagata Prefecture is known for its heavy snowfall, with the ski resort open from April until as late as July depending on the season. The runs are advanced so are recommended for experienced skiers and snowboarders.

Delight the tastebuds on a trip to Shodoshima, one of hundreds of small islands in the Seto Inland Sea. Enjoy the flavours of Shodoshima’s three key food industries in between exploring its stunning coastal and mountainous landscapes.

There are countless opportunities to enjoy art in Japan, including traditional art galleries, open-air museums and of course, art festivals. Experience a diverse range of contemporary artworks at these much-anticipated art festivals this year.

Explore at your own pace and experience a different side of Japan on a campervan trip! With a well-maintained road network, an abundance of onsen and sento, plus plenty of roadside stations to stock up on supplies and recharge, what are you waiting for?

Discover old-world traditions on an overnight stay in the ancient castle town of Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture. Each refurbished traditional Japanese house boasts a unique history, and guests can also experience pottery workshops and dine on meals created with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients.
