Dear ,

Welcome to the August 2022 Edition of the Japan Travel Trade Newsletter!

Thank you to those that attended our Melbourne and Sydney Roadshows. It was great to see you in person, and we hope it was an informative and enjoyable evening. For those who weren’t able to make it, you can find the supplier information here. Our next Roadshows will be held in February 2023 in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland. We look forward to seeing you there.

Border update

Last week, on 24 August, Prime Minister Kishida announced the next changes to Japan’s border entry guidelines: from 7 September, triple vaccinated travellers entering Japan will no longer be required to take a pre-departure PCR test. The daily entry caps will also be raised from the current 20,000 pax per day, though the new cap has not been announced yet.

The Prime Minister also said that Government of Japan is working on further changes and relaxations to border entry measures, and that further announcements will come, but has not yet said what the next step will be or when these announcements will be made. Please stay tuned as we will keep you updated with the latest news.

Please note that we are aware of news reports citing that FIT travellers can enter as long as their arrangements are booked by a travel agent but this was not part of the official announcement and we are not aware of any official information which backs up these claims.

Insider Tip
#15: Business card etiquette

Exchanging business cards, known as meishi, is an essential part of Japanese business etiquette. If you expect to meet potential business partners, be sure to carry your business card with you when travelling in Japan, and follow these tips to facilitate a smooth beginning to your relationship with Japanese professionals.

Do the exchange standing up; this shows more respect. Present your card with both hands, holding it so that the text faces your contact, and introduce yourself, bowing slightly. (If you can do it in Japanese, even better! For example, 'JNTO no Miles Sally desu. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu.') If meeting a group of people, it is best to introduce yourself and exchange cards with each individual one by one.

When receiving a card, take the near corners with both hands and bow in return. Read the details on the card before moving on to the next person. You can stack the cards you receive in your hand, but when you sit down to a conference table, place each card face up in front of you. If you are at a networking event and aren’t sitting, place the card neatly into your business card case or wallet, not into a pocket.
