TRIBAL NOTES
It's hard to believe this summer is almost over. We’ve had a glorious one. After a couple of years of hanging out on the farm, we decided to get out and see some of America, so we took a camping road trip to the West Coast. We worked our way across the Gulf coast  to San Antonio, Texas to see the sights and taste the local fare, then up to Santa Fe, New Mexico. We made it in time to visit Santa Fe’s farmer market, noted as one of the top 5 farmers markets in the states.

It was really exciting to see the range of food they grow in the mountains of that area. We made a stop at the  Earthship project outside of Taos, New Mexico. Wow this place is amazing.

The ideas they have for building shelter out of stuff we throw way is inspiring. Treking through the desert and seeing the natural wonders is something we all need to take some time to do; this truly is a beautiful country we live in. We hiked in the mountains of Yosemite National Park and found wild raspberries in fruit.

We ended the trip in San Francisco, the Mecca of good food and inspired living. Their farmers market is unbelievable. We were in heaven, with organic vegetables we think of as winter crops like kale and lettuce on display and then summer tomatoes just a few stalls away.  It’s a food lovers paradise.

So here we are back on the farm. The summer has treated us well, the gardens received the needed rain this year to give the tropical’s the lush look we’ve missed the last few years. The orchard has fared well, although it looks like the persimmons and citrus will have a light crop this year. We've been busy building a beautiful fruit crop to share with all you  fruit tree growers.

We’re all rested up and ready to get busy helping start more orchards and gardens, so if you get a chance, come visit. The gardens are at their peak, and the fruit tree selection is the best,! Besides, you know you need a road trip.....

THE FALL CROP REPORT
The summer rains have blessed us with a beautiful crop this year. As I walk through the rows of fruit trees that are ready for new homes, I’m amazed at the quality and beauty of this years crop.

This is our second season of training fruit trees in their pots for the structure they’ll need in their future years. Most nurseries hack their trees into pretty little round balls, with little thought to what is the best structure to help produce and hold a good crop load, but we take the time to train ours to open center, modified central leader, or central leader to give them the best start. If you want to learn the tricks to getting the most from your trees, we’ll gladly teach you how to prune your trees when you visit the nursery, or plan to attend our winter fruit tree pruning class. We love to help you get success.

WHAT’S NEW!! We’ve got an interesting collection of odd new fruits like Sherbert Berry,  Raisin Trees, and Tea Camellia .

Many varieties of the cold hardy citrus like ‘ Changshi’ tangerines and ‘Taiwanaca Lemons’ are back, as well as new varieties like ‘ Sugar Belle ’ a cold tolerant early ripening Honeybelle, and ‘ Shiranui ’ the incredibly sweet Ponkan Tangerine hybrid developed in Japan in 1972. It came to America in 2009, and fresh fruits sell for upwards of $1.50 each!
We now have ‘Delicious ’ a new University of Florida muscadine release available, and a few Sugar Cane jujube this year. Many of these are in short supply, so now is the time to get the fruits that are apt to sell out quickly.

VEGGIE HIGHLIGHTS—
If you haven’t started your fall vegetable garden, it’s not too late. In fact it’s the perfect time to plant the cool season greens and winter root vegetables. We have a great crop of fall veggies on the benches now.

We grow our own cell packs and offer varieties well suited to our area. If you want locally grown vegetables, start with locally grown plants; Speckled, bibs and mixed lettuce, 3 varieties of kale, Chinese greens, and a fresh selection of heirloom and non GMO seeds from Botanical Interests.

The strawberry plugs are coming soon, looks like we'll have them ready by mid October this year. Save a spot for some Sweet Charlie and Camerosa.
