Copyright considerations in the digital age

A message from KRM's President and CEO, Rick Olson

How does copyright apply to your online seminars?
You've engaged the services of a great speaker for your next webinar. And, an important part of your event is the slides and handouts your speaker provides.

Have you ever wondered whether it's okay for her to use those funny ice-breaker cartoons, informative graphs, beautiful photos or that short musical interlude? Has a speaker ever asked you if he holds or could hold the copyright to the material he presents for you?

Copyright law covers written material, music and lyrics, photos, cartoons, websites and blogs, among many other forms of expression.

Copyright law does apply to the information contained in your event, and it's important for you and your speakers to understand the protections and obligations that arise out of the law.

Check out the information in our FAQ link on the left side of the newsletter. We've got information about "works for hire," "the fair use doctrine" and more.

The bottom line
You and your speakers should err on the side of getting permission from the cartoonist, composer, producer, photographer, publisher or author before using the material.

Side note:
As a service to our clients, we add a copyright message to the end of all of your event recordings.

Check with your attorney if you have copyright questions.

Kind regards,
Rick

Event Assist: Your personal webinar guide
Is this your first webinar?

  • Have you experienced staff cuts, but still have as much, if not more, responsibility for your educational programs?
  • Would you like help to know what to do and when to do it, along with friendly reminders so you don't forget?
  • Are you just starting out and have a lot of webinar questions?
  • Do you prefer to have one specific person to contact with your event detail questions?
  • Are you planning your annual meeting or other conferences and absolutely can't find the time to plan your online educational programs successfully?
  • Do you prefer to have someone do most of the work for you and not have to worry about filling out forms, tasks, etc?
Event Assist helps you through every step, task and process

If you would like help with your events, particularly for your first few, your Event Assist will guide you every step of the way and answer all your most-pressing questions about the details of your events.

Your personal Event Assist is assigned to your events and will be the person you call and email for help and answers.

Your Event Assist will:
  1. Guide you through every step of your event planning, giving you the information and knowledge you need to do it on your own in the future (if you choose to do so).
  2. Send you friendly reminders and keep track of all of the tasks necessary to execute your events successfully.
    • Review and verify your event details and information to make sure it's accurate, and what you want (before the information is finalized).
    • Coordinate your event details with the KRM team to make sure your events are planned and delivered the way you want them.
    • Help you expedite tasks, when necessary.
    • Submit your event details for you ... so you don't have to.
You pay only for the time you use based on an hourly rate of $87.50 (billed in 15-minute increments). For your planning purposes: new clients are using between 1.5 and 3 hours. Those who want maximum assistance use 4 to 5 hours.

Family fun
My family keeps me busy. My husband, Jimmy, and I are parents to a very active two-and-a-half-year-old, Landon Patrick. Landon enjoys climbing, jumping, running and playing hard. Jimmy is an avid hunter and enjoys just about anything that takes him outdoors. We also have two adopted dogs: Maggie, a shepherd mix, and Molly, a black lab.

Our parents live close and get to enjoy their only grandchild often, which means Landon gets lots of attention! My two sisters and I are also very close. We are good friends, and I'm so thankful to have them in my life.

Finding quiet through the chaos
It always seems to be chaotic at our house. So, when I get a chance to settle down with a good book I take it! I like mysteries and thrillers the most, but throw in a drama every now and then. I have a background in graphic design (no, it doesn't translate to Finance!) and photography.

I love to study architecture and the rhythms and patterns found in nature from behind a lens. I can't remember not having a camera, even when it was just a toy camera as a child.
