Forest corridors form important ecological links that connect tiger reserves, thus providing a larger habitat to dispersing tigers. Bandhavgarh-Sanjay Dubri Corridor (BSDC) is one such corridor that connects Bandhavgarh and Sanjay Dubri tiger reserves in Central India.
The local communities depend on these corridor areas for fuel wood, cattle grazing, minor forest produce, timber for housing, among others. This puts severe pressure on the forests, particularly in corridors.
Through ‘Preserving What’s Precious’, a collaborative project of The Corbett Foundation (TCF) and Jet Privilege Pvt Ltd (JPPL), a major initiative of habitat improvement and restoration has been undertaken to reinstate the health of such degraded forest patches. Plantation of native species was undertaken to reforest around 80 hectares of degraded forest patches in August-September.
The entire process actively involved local communities as they will be the sentinels of these growing forests now and in the coming years. TCF is extremely grateful to JPPL for its support for this venture that will certainly bring in a necessary change in the wildlife conservation space, as well as in the lives of the local communities!
