BEST RESPONSIBLE TOURISM AWARD!

The Corbett Foundation is the proud recipient of the Best Responsible Tourism Project Award for its "Tribal Museum"  project  during the MP Tourism Awards 2016 held in Bhopal on 15th October. The award was presented by the hon'ble Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh in the presence of other dignitaries, and received by TCF's Baiga colleagues from Kanha. The Baiga community from Bandhatola village in the buffer zone of Kanha Tiger Reserve, manage the Tribal Museum through Mukki Eco Vikas Samiti - a Self Help Group facilitated by TCF. All earnings from this Tribal Museum go to this SHG. We take this opportunity to thank Mr Sharad Sanghi, our Trustee and a Member of the State Wildlife Advisory Board of MP, who supported the construction of the Tribal Museum in 2013.

'SILAI SCHOOL' AT KANHA

USHA International Ltd. and The Corbett Foundation have collaborated to launch the ‘Silai School’ Programme in Kanha Tiger Reserve. A batch of ten local women entrepreneurs are being trained, in TCF’s Community Conservation Centre in village Baherakhar on the outskirts of Kanha Tiger Reserve, to tailor various garments and also to become master trainers in the Silai School they will establish in their village. USHA has sponsored a sewing machine for each trainee and advanced training in this skill.

IVAD & THE VULTURE SENTINELS OF KAZIRANGA

The Corbett Foundation has initiated a vulture conservation project in villages in Demoh in Sivsagar, Assam. Protecting nest-bearing trees contributes greatly to conserving the critically endangered vulture species. As a community-based conservation approach, TCF has identified seven villagers who have undertaken to protect nest-bearing trees in their farms and premises, and presented each with a certificate of appreciation and a bicycle, honouring them as ‘Vulture Sentinels’. Other activities under this project include a population survey and mass awareness programmes. TCF also celebrated International Vulture Awareness Day (IVAD) across its divisions, conducting poster, drawing and essay competitions for students, discussions and documentary screenings to raise awareness about the ecological significance of the vulture and the conservation of its rapidly declining population.

CAPACITY BUILDING AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT FOR NATURE GUIDES

TCF collaborated with the respective forest departments of Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench Tiger Reserves to conduct a Capacity Building and Skill Development programme for the nature guides of these reserves from September 21st to 30th, 2016. Three-day sessions were conducted at each reserve, attended by a total of 280 individuals comprising experienced and freshly recruited nature guides.

SOLAR FENCING FOR CROP PROTECTION
TCF has undertaken a community-based solar fencing project to protect standing crops in farms adjacent to Kaziranga Tiger Reserve from being destroyed by foraging wild elephants. With villagers contributing labour and providing bamboo posts, a 4 kilometer-long solar-powered fence will be erected, protecting more than 3000 bighas of farms. The community was involved to inculcate a sense of ownership of this installation and ensure the sustainability of this project, with the welfare of farmers as well as the unhindered movement of elephants beyond forest boundaries being addressed. Once the crop has been harvested, the solar fences will be removed for safekeeping by the villagers, to be reinstalled the following season.
CONFLICT MITIGATION IN BANDHAVGARH
TCF Bandhavgarh donated a cow to a resident of a village in Bandhavgarh whose husband fell victim to a tiger attack the previous year. This activity was aimed at reducing human-wildlife conflict as well as to promote stall-feeding among a community that is heavily forest dependent for the purpose of cattle rearing.
CONFLICT MITIGATION IN KAZIRANGA
The residence of a forest guard, located adjacent to Kaziranga Tiger Reserve was damaged by an elephant during the night. TCF repaired and restored this residence to mitigate human-wildlife conflict and to support this tolerant forest-dwelling community. TCF also provided a new hand pump to a resident of Dumjan village to replace the previous one damaged by an elephant. These are two of seventeen such incidents where TCF was able to contribute positively, thanks to the generous support of the Hem Chandra Foundation.
