NPCI-funded Integrated Rural Development Programme

With the support of National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), The Corbett foundation (TCF) has embarked on a 3-year project to bring about a holistic rural development in 15 villages of Sawantwadi block in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. The project will address the needs and challenges of livelihood, education, natural resource management/conservation, water and sanitation, awareness generation and conservation education in these villages. The project is in tune with the holistic approach that TCF believes in and practices to address the conservation issues around wilderness areas. The area around Amboli-Dodamarg Conservation Reserve, where many of the villages are situated, is a part of the Western Ghats and acts as corridor for the dispersing population of tigers and other threatened wildlife between the forest areas of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka.

TCF is grateful to NPCI for this valuable funding support towards this important project.

Save Amur Falcon Campaign

Amur falcon ( Falco amurensis) is a long-distance flocking, migratory species that breeds in China, Mongolia and Russia and migrates to southern African countries during the non-breeding season passing over South and Southeast Asian countries including India. These falconst arrive in very large numbers in the northeast states of Nagaland and Manipur at the begining of the winter season, where they have been traditionally hunted. However, consistent conservation efforts by NGOs and state government agencies have reduced this threat to a large extent.

Under it's nature conservation project in Tamenglong district of Manipur, The Corbett Foundation (TCF) in collaboration with IndiGo Reach has been working with the local villagers and established a network of youths to strengthen the Amur Falcon conservation efforts under a massive campaign for protecting the Amur falcon. The Manipur Forest Department is a valuable partner in this campaign and it has mostly adopted awareness literature and posters designed by The Corbett Foundation to reach out to the students and villagers not to harm the birds and promote ecotourism. Puching and Chiulon villages formed the core of the campaign with youth, kids, and women where these falcons often roost.

This campaign is a part of the larger nature conservation project that includes community livelihoods, habitat restoration, reducing community dependence on forests and conservation education. We are grateful to IndiGo Reach for this much-needed financial support in this less-explored biodiversity-rich region of northeast India.

Bajaj Saksham Programme in Corbett Landscape
The Corbett Foundation, with the support of Bajaj Auto Ltd. has continued its efforts to reach out to the forest-dependent communities from around 100 villages in and around Corbett Tiger Reserve, Uttarakhand with a health programme that provides primary healthcare support and awareness.

TCF is grateful to Bajaj Auto Ltd. for its continued financial support towards this programmes since 2015-16.
Stall-feeding Project in Kanha Tiger Reserve
The Corbett Foundation with the support of Born Free Foundation, UK has embarked on a stall-feeding project in village Baherakhar in the buffer zone of Kanha Tiger Reserve. The project provides fodder grown on private land to the village livestock instead of traditional free grazing that villagers have been practicing. This traditional practice puts a lot of pressure on the forest by affecting regeneration, creating resource competition with the wild herbivores, increases the risk of spreading diseases among the wild animals and enhances the risk of human-wildlife conflict. Instead of the free grazing, the villagers harvest the fodder grown and stall-feed their cattle. This is a pioneering initiative and will be a  model to be replicated in other forested landscapes.

TCF is grateful to the Born Free Foundation for this financial support and is proud to be a partner of the Satpuda Landscape Tiger Partnership #SLTP supported by the Born Free Foundation in Central Indian Landscape. To know more about SLTP, please access this link.
Kanakpar Grassland Restoration Project receives international award

The Corbett Foundation (TCF) has successfully restored and developed five plots (~10 acre each) grasslands in collaboration with the villagers of Kanakpar village in Abdasa taluka, Kutch district, Gujarat. The Kanakpar Gau Seva Samiti (KGSS), a committee formed by the villagers, works under the guidance of TCF to ensure scientific management of grassland plots. The grassland plots are protected through fencing, and KGSS ensures strict control over livestock grazing in these plots. In 2020, around 30 tons of grass was harvested by the villagers from these plots. The entire project has been funded by the Mumbai Gau Rakshak Trust and The Habitats Trust. In recognition of this effort, the KGSS has received the ‘Pastoralists & Rangelands Award – 2021’ from several entries received from five countries in South and Central Asia in an online ceremony held on October 27, 2021. TCF and KGSS are grateful to the organisers (SEVA and International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists), and the jury for appreciating our efforts.

Habitat Restoration in Kanha Tiger Reserve

The Corbett Foundation in collaboration with Kanha Tiger Reserve and with the kind support from PwC India Foundation, initiated habitat restoration over 16 hectares of degraded forest land in the buffer zone of Kanha. With active participation of local Eco-development Committees, TCF managed to remove around 150,000 shrubs of lantana that covered around 70% of the 16 hectares. The plots have been protected from livestock grazing and around 11,000 saplings of local tree species and bamboo have been planted in 2019 and 2020. The plots have seen luxuriant growth of local grasses and herbs along with a decent growth of the saplings planted. The local villagers harvest grass/fodder to stall-feed their livestock thereby reducing the direct livestock grazing pressure from the nearby forest.

TCF is grateful to PwC India Foundation and to Kanha Tiger Reserve for this support, partnership and collaboration.

TCF congratulates Dr. Pandey for this honour!

IUCN Member's Assemble supports GIB conservation in India

During the IUCN World Conservation Congress (WCC) held in Marseille, France, from 3-11 September 2021, the Members Assembly voted in favour of the Motion titled Preventing the extinction of the Great Indian Bustard ( Ardeotis nigriceps) in India. The Corbett Foundation, a Member of the IUCN, took the lead in proposing this Motion and received support from the following national organisations: Aaranyak, Bombay Natural History Society, Gujarat Ecology Society, Wildlife Conservation Trust, Wildlife Protection Society of India and Wildlife Trust of India, and international organisations: BirdLife International (UK) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (UK). This Motion passed into a Resolution, is now a part of IUCN’s general policy that guides conservation strategies across the world. This Resolution would help to further intensify and strengthen the efforts to conserve and protect the last surviving population of the Great Indian Bustard in India. The text of this Resolution can be accessed at this link.
