UK General Election 2015
David Cameron's Conservative party won a surprise majority, leading to the resignation of Labour and Liberal Democrat leaders, Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg, triggering leadership contests in both parties.
Throughout the election campaign, the KAS UK and Republic of Ireland office, provided extensive coverage in both English and German on our website.

On 21 May 2015, Minster-President Stanislaw Tillich held discussions with journalists, academics and financial experts. The talks focused on the situation in the UK in the wake of the 2015 general elections.

The KAS UK and Republic of Ireland office is pleased to announce a series of workshops, organised in conjunction with Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs.

Brazil as an Emerging Energy Superpower:
EUCERS/ISD/KAS Energy Talks, King's College London, 15 July 2015
On 15 July 2015 the European Centre for Energy and Resource Security (EUCERS), together with the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) held the third panel disussion in the 2015 EUCERS/ISD/KAS Energy Talks on Brazil as an emerging energy superpower. The event took place at King's College London (KCL).

KAS/FT/GPI Panel Discussions 2015
Between May and June 2015, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS), the Federal Trust (FT) and the Global Policy Institute (GPI) jointly organised a series of panel discussions at Mary Sumner House, London, assessing the contrasting and overlapping attitudes to major European questions in the UK and in Germany.
The first discussion, held on 27 May, looked at British and German perspectives on the European Institutions. On the panel were the Rt Hon Baroness Quin (House of Lords), Josef Janning (ECFR), Hans-Hartwig Blomeier (KAS) and Brendan Donelly (Federal Trust). |

The second event took place on 18 June. The theme of the discussion was British and German attitudes towards the single market. On the panel of experts were Dr Holger Schmiedling (Berenberg Bank), Graham Bishop (grahambishop.com), John Cooke (FT), Hans-Hartwig Blomeier (KAS) and Brendan Donelly (Federal Trust). The third and final event was held on 7 July. The topic was the single market. The panel featured Dr Stephan Hesselmann (CDU/CSU), Catherine Stewart (Interel), Rod Dowler (Global Policy Institute), Hans-Hartwig Blomeier (KAS) and Brendan Donelly (Federal Trust).

KAS/European Movement: 3rd EU Briefing
On 29 June, the 3rd EU-Briefing organised by KAS and European Movement UK, took place at the University of Westminster in London.
At the core of the discussion was the British EU reform agenda in relation to the planned referendum, which will determine the future EU membership on the United Kingdom.

Britain and Germany can work together to deliver free movement reform

Alok Sharma is MP for Reading West. Stephan Mayer is a member of the Bundestag for Altötting-Mühldorf am Inn.
Following the return of David Cameron as Prime Minister, now with a majority in the House of Commons, it is certain that the UK will hold a referendum on its future membership of the European Union by the end of 2017. Debate has therefore returned to whether the Prime Minister can really deliver on his proposals to reform the EU to make it more flexible, more competitive - and remove the financial incentives that attract EU migrants to the UK.

How should political parties react to an individualistic society?

Voters are becoming unstable in their voting behaviour, and party identification is in decline. These are only two of the developments that have their roots in a more individualistic society. Parties are confronted with these developments and have to find a way to maintain their attraction for the electorate. This article illustrates the challenges for parties and gives recommendations for action to maintain political stability.

EU opponents in the 8th European Parliament - Taking stock of the last year

In the run-up to the European elections of 2014, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung predicted that the EU's opponents would grow in strength. Over the last ten to fifteen years, sever protest parties whose original attitude had been mainly critical towards foreigners, Islam, or immigration had set up the European Union as their second enemy stereotype. The forecasts were overtaken by reality: never before have there been so many EU opponents sitting in the European Parliament as now.
