Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me continually, and the taxpayers, present and future, continually pay the price of profligate spending.
“It didn’t take long for the veil to be lifted from the Republican plans for Illinois,” alerts Lex Green, Libertarian candidate for Governor in the past election, in a scathing commentary on the bankruptcy of Republican conviction, and Illinois government finances.
“Sadly but predictably, Treasurer-elect Dan Rutherford and Comptroller- elect Judy Baar Topinka have both indicated support for state borrowing. Green adds, “the fact that borrowing replaces spending cuts shows that Republicans don’t care about fixing our state finances.”
Libertarian candidate for State Comptroller, Julie Fox, offers, “Borrowing to keep the state operating is no different than using a credit card to pay one's basic household expenses. It is unsustainable. The only option for Illinois, if we expect the state to recover, is to cut spending. More borrowing will surely lead to more tax increases to pay back the debt, and tax increases are the last thing we need in an economy where many people have lost their jobs and their homes.”
So much for tax relief for taxpayers from Republicans.
So much for spending cuts from Republicans.
So much for fiscal responsibility from Republicans.
So much of the same from Republicans, talking a good game during election time, and reverting back to the same tax, borrow and spend paradigm that has beleaguered taxpayers in Illinois for decades.
Lex Green concludes, “The Libertarian Party of Illinois has a plan to balance the Illinois budget and to give tax relief to Illinois taxpayers. Now that the veil has been lifted, the truth is plain to see. Only the Libertarian Party of Illinois stands for fiscal responsibility.”
It’s high time the Illinois taxpayers relinquish the role of Charlie Brown and recognize that neither the Republicans nor the Democrats will ever straighten out the finances in this state. It will take new blood, sound ideas of limited government and a political party dedicated to the American dream of individual freedom, self responsibility, limited government, and fiscal responsibility. In short, it will take the Libertarian Party.
Republican Charade Unveiled
by Lex Green
It didn’t take long for the veil to be lifted from the Republican plans for Illinois. Treasurer elect Dan Rutherford and Comptroller elect Judy Baar Topinka have both indicated support for state borrowing. Although the GOP claims to have a conservative platform, this is just another example of their lack of conviction to true fiscal responsibility. The interest on state bonds is reason enough to avoid borrowing. But the fact that borrowing replaces spending cuts shows that Republicans don’t care about fixing our state finances.
This is part of a long list of Republican initiatives that have helped to get Illinois into the current fiscal mess. Gubernatorial hopeful Senator Bill Brady refused to adopt a budget proposal that addressed the magnitude of the state’s deficit. Former governor Jim Edgar chided Senator Brady for not including tax increases as part of his plan. Then, finally, Senator Brady called for $50 Billion dollars in future borrowing to cover state shortfalls. Now the two newly elected state officers Rutherford and Topinka are going down the same reckless path.
It is time for Republicans across the state to drop the pretense that their party can fix the state’s financial shortfall. What their leaders intend to do is rob future generations in order to win elections today. This is a lose-lose proposition for taxpayers and government employees alike.
The Libertarian Party of Illinois has a plan to balance the Illinois budget and to give tax relief to Illinois taxpayers. Now that the veil has been lifted, the truth is plain to see. Only the Libertarian Party of Illinois stands for fiscal responsibility.
