Statewide Ballot Measures Making Waves |
|
|
1) Alaska Oil Tax Cuts Veto Referendum
If this measure passes, it will roll back oil company tax breaks that were passed by the Alaska State Senate. There's heated debate about what's best for Alaska's economy. Alaskan voters will have their say on August 19.
2) Florida Right to Medical Marijuana Initiative
On November 4, Florida is set to become the 24th state to legalize medical marijuana. Despite public opposition from Governor Rick Scott, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Senator Marco Rubio and other public officials, the measure is polling extremely well for supporters.
3) California Proposition 46
This measure, also known as the Medical Malpractice Lawsuits Cap and Drug Testing of Doctors Initiative, is generating controversy, particularly among those in the medical field. If approved, the measure would increase the state's current cap on medical negligence damages from $250,000 to over $1 million. It would also require drug and alcohol testing of doctors and reporting of positive tests to the California Medical Board. |

4) Washington Gun Amendments
In Washington State, it's double the fun with two competing gun-related measures set to appear on the November ballot. Initiative 594 would require universal background checks for gun purchases, while Measure 591 would prevent the government from implementing background checks unless a federal standard is established. Washington voters will need to make up their minds, because polls have shown majority support for
both measures.
5) Missouri Teacher Performance Evaluation
If approved by voters, this measure would implement teacher performance evaluations that would be used to determine whether a teacher should be dismissed, retained, demoted or promoted. Education reformers nationwide will be watching to see how Missouri votes on this public education bellwether.
