A new survey finds that small businesses plan to increase their online advertising by 29 percent this year.

Small businesses are investing more of their advertising dollars online instead of in traditional advertising venues, according to a survey conducted by Borrell Associates, a Williamsburg, Va.-based local advertising firm. Its 2011 Outlook survey asked 2,872 small and midsize businesses about their advertising budgets, and found that they plan to increase their online ad spending by 29 percent this year, compared to a 4.5 percent increase for their offline ad budgets.

Overall, small businesses don't typically dedicate a big chunk of their budgets to advertising -- the survey found that the average small business spends less than $12,000 on all advertising efforts, with approximately $2,300 of it going to online advertising. The areas of online advertising that small businesses plan to invest in the most are e-mail marketing campaigns and involvement with social media, as well as improvements to their company websites. Of the respondents surveyed, 86 percent reported having a website, a number that's expected to increase to 91 percent in 2011, according to the survey.

In terms of the overall online advertising picture, the survey found that small and midsize businesses make up 95 percent of all local advertising online, which has prompted companies like Google and Groupon to more aggressively target that market with their services in the past year.

Dear Subscriber,

Don't Melt Down

As an entrepreneur, you're probably either slightly frazzled, mildly frayed or full-on exhausted.

Overwork went straight to Douglas Heddings' back. The founder of Heddings Property Group in New York City, Heddings has suffered from chronic stress-related back pain for more than a decade. Even as he recuperated from spine surgery, the pace didn't let up. His inbox filled at the rate of 50 e-mails per hour. The back problem "has a great deal to do with the fact that I feel I have to be on call 24/7," Heddings says.

"This is not good for my mental and physical well-being."

Researchers agree. Frequent long hours can increase stress and touch off a host of health hazards, including insomnia and high blood pressure. Poor decision-making starts to creep in. And unlike your laptop, your system doesn't have an internal fan to cool it down.

A 2006 study at the University of California, Irvine found that chronic workweeks of more than 51 hours can triple the risk of hypertension. And, after looking over the data from a British study of civil servants, Marianna Virtanen of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health found that workdays of 11 or 12 hours increase the risk of coronary events by 56 percent. Stress is the culprit, triggering the release of hormones that help contribute to plaque build-up inside arteries. Long days were also linked to sleep problems and depression.
