Part 1 of 3 Part Series:
The Internet has brought the ability for hundreds of
millions of people to pass and share information. Much of the time, this
information is based on opinion, and thus consequently, affects
reputation. Reputation is a phenomenon not owned by an individual, but
rather is based on an agent's perception of a target, and therefore, cannot be
controlled by the target. Negative and sometimes untrue postings place a
modern day "Scarlet Letter" onto companies causing many to suffer bad
publicity. Customers whom seek services elsewhere solely on the illusion
of a poor reputation is especially painful and companies can starve.
Without the right protocols in place to assist in reconciliation, business
owners are forced into submission and must take measures to thwart
false accusations.
Do You Know What Search Engines Are Saying About You?
For the first time in humanity, one person can talk to 1.7
billion people for free, and unfiltered. People have the ability to check the
credentials of you and your company online. More are doing this everyday. Your
customers are deciding if you will earn their business BEFORE you ever speak
with them. Today, you can and must control your online reputation. The longer
you wait to start, the harder it will be to control it.
Your online reputation is quickly going to become a valid
factor in the success of your organization. If you are not controlling your
online reputation, your customers will.
Unfortunately the most motivated customers are the ones out to damage
your reputation.
You are not going to be able to control what people say
about you so you must be prepared to deal with it. You must “own” your search results. The
internet has become the place where we credential everything. It is as much a decision making engine as it
is a search engine.
Negative reporting
sites seem to trump any positive searches a
company may have...even if the information is not accurate. This phenomenon is
causing small business owners to lose millions of dollars in revenue going to
their competitors. The sad thing is that much of the data is coming from
disgruntled customers, ex-employees and even competitors who post inaccurate
information for the purpose of sabotage.
“If you lose dollars for the firm through bad decisions, I
will forgive you. If you lose reputation for the firm, I will be ruthless.” ~Warren
Buffet~
Stay tuned for Part 2.
