Summer Countdown – Tasks for a Successful End of School "Landing"

As the school year comes to an end, don't forget about these important end-of-year tasks. Get them done now, so you can enjoy the summer and be ready for next year!

Did you set up a budget committee to prepare for next year?

  • Include the treasurer as chair, the ways and means chair and the membership chair. They must plan and work together to fund programs and activities, leadership training and attendance at PTA events.
  • Be sure to budget for insurance, PTA region functions (workshops, conferences, Presidents and Principals Dinner), and attending state PTA events (SLC and Convention registration fees are legitimate PTA expenses).

Did you set up your calendar for next year?

  • Check your bylaws for required meetings (month for adoption of budget, election of nominating committee, election meeting and annual meeting).
  • Consult with the school principal or administrator to be sure there are no date conflicts between school/district programs and PTA functions.

Did you start to plan next year's programs?

  • Meet with appropriate chairs, administrator and teacher representatives.
  • Review goals for the year and discuss long-term goals.
  • Request input from board members about ongoing projects and activities.
  • Discuss and plan fundraisers if necessary.

Make sure you update the Annual Officers' Contact Information Sheet (Form A).

Check the expiration date of your bylaws. If your bylaws have not been revised in more than three years, select a committee to review and update them as necessary. Bylaws must be submitted to your region PTA bylaws chair 90 days prior to expiration date.

All outgoing officers and chairs should turn over materials and reports to incoming officers and chairs. Think about meeting with your successor this summer to help her/him get ready for next year.

Summer Leadership Conference
July 21-23, 2017, Utica College

Utica College is a casual, relaxing and scenic environment where you can network with state PTA leaders and other PTA members from around the state, and expand your leadership skills.

Excelsior Scholarship Application Available!

As part of his 2017 budget, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the launch of the Excelsior Scholarship, the first-in-the-nation program that makes New York State public universities tuition-free for families making up to $125,000 per year once fully phased in. As you know, the scholarship is available to students attending a SUNY or CUNY school starting this fall whose families make up to $100,000.

I am pleased to let you know that the Excelsior Scholarship application is now available on the Higher Education Services Corporation website. The application is open from June 7 to July 21. You can find more information, including FAQs and a sign-up form to receive email alerts about the scholarship, at this link. As an education leader in your community, we hope that you will share this information widely and encourage students to apply.

More than 940,000 middle-class families across New York State will be eligible for the Scholarship, and the requirements are simple.

In order to apply, students must:

  • Be residents of New York State
  • Plan to attend a SUNY or CUNY two- or four-year degree program
  • Take 30 credits per year and make progress towards graduation
  • Maintain good academic standing
  • Be on track to graduate on time with an Associate’s Degree in two years or a Bachelor’s Degree in four years

New regulations passed by the Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) Board of Trustees further clarify and provide flexibility for Excelsior Scholars by:

  • Allowing for the interruption of study and waiver of post-award obligations based on military service requirements
  • Allowing students to apply college credits earned in high school toward the 30-credits per year completion requirements
  • Prorating repayment of an award if residency/work requirements are not met, and making provisions for waiver/postponement of repayment in cases of extreme hardship
  • Allowing current college students who are six or less credits short of meeting the program’s credit requirements the opportunity to become eligible for the Excelsior Scholarship in 2018-2019, enabling them to "catch up" and qualify
  • Authorizing disabled students to attend part-time and receive a pro-rated award

The program goes into effect immediately, and is available for students whose families earn up to $100,000 annually beginning in the fall of 2017. It will extend to families making up to $125,000 annually by 2019.

New - "PARP Task Force"

NYS PTA is forming a PARP Task Force to review, revise and update the current PARP Toolkit. We are looking for any PARP Chair or unit/council person interested in working with us to complete this task.

If you have used the PARP Toolkit you know what a valuable tool the materials are to conducting a successful program. BUT, the materials need a fresh look and more current materials.

So we need your help. We will be working over the summer and to have the toolkit ready to be used by units by the end of September.

Teacher Fellowship For Graduate Study In Memory of Richard Gazzola

The Teacher Fellowship was established in 1961 to encourage excellent teachers to stay in the classroom by providing them opportunity to improve teaching skills, update professional knowledge, and expand professional perspectives. In 1992, the Fellowship was named to honor a “Master Teacher,” Richard Gazzola, who served on the New York State PTA Board of Directors for many years prior to his untimely death in 1991.
