July Steps for Fall Success

Here are some things you can do during July to ensure a successful PTA "back to school" in September.

☑️ Make certain all materials have been turned over to new officers and chairs.

☑️ Prepare budget and programs for the next PTA year with appropriate committees. Check bylaws and procedures regarding “Plans of Work.”

☑️ Consider holding an orientation for your board members.

☑️ Check your bylaws. They must be approved by the New York State PTA every three years. You will find the Bylaws EZ information on the website or contact your region PTA bylaws chair for help.

☑️ Unit treasurer – make sure you file signature cards with bank, if needed.

☑️ Make sure your unit's Annual Officers’ Contact Information (Form A) was filed electronically or printed and mailed to your region director. You need to do this every year, even if your information hasn't changed.

Practical Ways to Engage and Motivate Volunteers

from the NYS PTA Resource Guide, Section 3 - PTA Board

Provide Meaningful Tasks

  • Provide meaningful tasks and tell volunteers how their work contributes to the overall success of the PTA organization or project.
  • Give volunteers an orientation that links volunteer participation to the broader mission of PTA.
  • Create positions that achieve diverse tasks.
  • Don’t assign tasks that are unorganized or waste volunteers’ time.

Show Volunteers Respect

  • Consider the individual PTA volunteer and don’t ask a volunteer to do something he or she can’t handle.
  • Give volunteers clear directions and the necessary tools to perform tasks. Be available to answer questions.
  • Seriously consider volunteers’ advice and recommendations. Listen.

State of Play Reports
Anne Ehrlich, Health Specialist

The Aspen Institute is releasing State of Play regional reports. The news for fitness and fun for America’s kids is not good.

Here are the Western New York and Rochester/Finger Lakes reports.

These documents report on the state of youth sports and give ideas for making play opportunities more inclusive.

As a NYS PTA member, you'll receive a $500 credit at closing on a Citizens Bank purchase or refinance mortgage loan. You can also save 0.125 percentage points off your mortgage interest rate with a Citizens Bank checking account. Find out more here.
