Early Learning Task Force – Membership Application Available

Kyle McCauley Belokopitsky, Esq., Executive Director

From SED:

The New York State Education Department (SED) is currently accepting applications for membership in the NYSED Early Learning Task Force.

The main goal for the Task Force will be to discuss concerns about how learning standards affect our earliest learners, specifically students in prekindergarten to Grade 2.

The Early Learning Task Force will be comprised of around 30 early learning educators, including P-2 classroom teachers, parents, special education teachers, ESOL teachers, program administrators, curriculum specialists, college professors, developmental specialists and school administrators. Additionally, a child developmental specialist will participate in the Task Force to provide research in this area.

The application is open until November 30, 2016.

SED will then begin the selection process and contact you by email if you are selected to the task force. You may apply here.

Education Update

Catherine M. Romano, Education Coordinator

Every Student Success Act

The Regents discussed the High Concept Ideas reviewed by the ESSA Think Tank and through regional feedback sessions, the slides and webcast from the early morning session outlined reactions to the concepts. In the afternoon, Michael Cohen of Achieve, and Linda Darling Hammond, shared perspectives on Equity and ESSA with College and Career Readiness slides and ESSA and Equity slides. NYSED's timeline to structure the ESSA plan has been extended to July 2016, so be on the lookout for ways to comment in January 2017.

At your PTA meetings during the next few months, take the time to review the High Concept Ideas with your administrators, educators and parents. It is important to have the parent voice in our state's plan to have all students achieve a diploma and receive high quality education, along with school measures.

You can also listen here as Commissioner Elia discusses these issues and testing concerns.

Getting Ready for the State Budget

NYSED and Regents proposals to be adopted in December that will inform the Governor and legislature on Conceptual Framework for State Aid, Legislative Priorities, State Aid Priorities. These will be finalized at the next Regents meeting
