A View from the Poolside

One of the key ingredients in building a raw meal for our dogs is unbleached green tripe.

What is tripe, you might ask? It’s unprocessed stomach tissue from ruminants such as cows or sheep. I know it sounds gross - and it is  - the smell really is quite awful, but the nutritional benefits are huge. Many people report seeing almost immediate improvement in coat, skin, energy, teeth and digestion when they switch to a diet comprised mostly of green tripe. As a food, tripe is somewhat unfamiliar in the United States although people in other parts of the world people have been feeding tripe for decades. There are folks who feed nothing but tripe to their pets and they report remarkable results.

Want more evidence trips sounds like a perfect food? Several analyses show that tripe’s calcium to phosphorus ratio is 1:1, which is considered ideal for dogs. It’s overall pH is slightly acidic, which aids in digestion. The protein content is 10 percent and its fat content is around 5 percent. Tripe contains essential fatty acids in their recommended proportions as well as magnesium, potassium, B-complex vitamins, the amino acid taurine, other amino acids and about 4 percent fiber. It also contains trace amounts of other mineral and vitamins A, C, D and E. Green tripe is approximately 78 percent moisture or water.

We think that green tripe is very easy to feed because even finicky dogs dive right in (the smell is hard to resist - for them, at least). Tripe is the one food most dogs respond to even when they refuse everything else. It is also very well tolerated by many dogs with allergies and food sensitivities.

Adding tripe as a key component to your dogs raw diet in our opinion is both smart and savvy. Please don’t let "what it is" or "how it smells" affect your decision about giving this simple and inexpensive food source a try in your pet's diet.  Tripe … it’s what’s for dinner!                                                           ~Lee

P.S.  We are having a party on Saturday, January 28th to celebrate our tenth anniversary.  We hope you can make it!

Sparky wins by a nose!

      A sweet soul, Sparky,

won the grand prize in our annual Holiday
photo contest with a whopping 196 votes! He's the recipient of a free swim, a complimentary massage and $100 shopping spree at the store. His family is thrilled and we wanted to share his story.

Dear Supporters of Sparky,
Wow! We never expected this kind of response. It took a collective group to win this wonderful prize for our little Sparky. Our friends plus their friends, our family, all of the fans and supporters of shelties and rescue. It was November 2010 that Central Illinois Sheltie Rescue took Sparky in, and he was fostered for
months before joining us in February. The outpouring of support for this little guy is truly heartwarming. Sparky has spondylosis, bi-lateral hip dysplasia and arthritis - so this is a wonderful gift to him from every one of you who voted and from Natural Healing Whole Dog Wellness. Thank you again for voting for Sparky.
Sincerely,
The Witt Family

December's Most Improved Swimmer
"Phil"
Phil swam in typical boxer style the first time he joined us - think vertical windmill with feet flying above water! As you've noticed from past "most improved" recipients - we tend to see this initial starting posture from boxers until they get "the hang of it." Until then, they're all splash, little paddle.
It turns out all Phil needed to make him turn the figurative corner was a food lure.
With food in front of him he now glides around the pool like a champ. We’re not certain whether it gives him the focus he needs, or he pursues it because he doesn't like his treats wet and he wants to catch it before it hits the water, but Phil will follow that food everywhere.
His owners are so impressed with his energy level in the days after his swim sessions that they continue to make the trek out here from Chicago on a regular basis.
Whatever the reason, Phil, we're glad the food worked!
