Spearmint: A global oil with distinct North African flavour

Spearmint is cultivated extensively in Europe, North Africa and North America, with different cultivars favored in each region. However, the historically and culturally revered Spearmint is the original Nana Mint of North Africa, especially Morocco, where it is an absolute must to greet any guest with (Nana Mint) Tea.

A short excerpt from Stefen Arctanders classic book Perfume and Flavor Material of Natural Origins sums it up best:
 
Spearmint is cultivated in many areas as a culinary herb, e.g. in Egypt. In culinary terms the word mint always refers to one of the Spearmint varieties. The na’na of the North African countries is an almost non-hairy variety of Spearmint, related to Mentha viridis. It is cultivated in hundreds of thousands of small private gardens and used extensively as a tea (shai), as a tonic and a popular infusion. At least three glasses of hot and heavily sweetened shai is a must for guests, travellers and friends at homes or camps all over the Mediterranean countries far into the Sahara and the Middle East.
 

Therapeutic Properties

According to French Style Aromatherapy the oil is a good anti-inflammatory and calming agent, mucolytic and tonifying for the digestive tract. According to l'aromathérapie exactement its main indications are acute and chronic bronchitis, difficult digestion, bile deficiency and inflamed bladder infection.

Moroccan Nana Mint Essential Oil is quite different from Peppermint Essential Oil as it contains very little Menthol and a high percentage of (-) Carvone, granting the oil refreshing qualities both elegant and gentle.
