for their foliage and their bloom. You may already grow some--the edible portion of artichoke, broccoli, and cauliflower are all immature flowers. Nasturtium leaves and flowers taste peppery. Squash blossoms have a cucumber and berry flavor. Some marigolds taste unpleasantly strong, but others are mild. Be sure, however, to harvest only flowers and foliage that haven't been sprayed with a pesticide not registered for food.

Herbs for Beginning Gardeners

You may have a problem deciding which herbs to plant because of the large number of herbs from which to select. A quick check of your supermarket may give you some idea of the types of herbs you would like to grow and also will serve as a planting guide. Cookbooks with your favorite recipes also offer information on uses of various herbs as flavorings.

Following is a good variety of flavors and uses of recommended herbs for beginners:

Strong herbs -- winter savory, rosemary, sage
Herbs strong enough for accent -- sweet basil, dill, mint, sweet marjoram, tarragon, thyme
Herbs for blending -- chives, parsley, summer savory

As your interests increase, you can add to the variety of herbs in your garden. Keep in mind, herbs can be annuals, biennials, or perennials when selecting herbs to grow for the first time.

Annuals (bloom one season and die) -- anise, basil, chervil, coriander, dill, summer savory.
Biennials (live two seasons, blooming second season only) -- caraway, parsley.
Perennials (overwinter; bloom each season once established) -- chives, fennel, lovage, marjoram, mint, tarragon,
thyme, winter savory.

Adding new color to your garden is "Wise"

New Colors Can  Transform your Garden. An exciting and inexpensive way to bring the “pop” back into your garden space is to add new colors to your existing color pallette for a nice dramatic change.  Each year we look forward to new and interesting color ideas for the upcoming year.

Color for your Garden

  • Visit our website and take advantage of our Flowers Selection Tool.

Bedding plants are plants (usually annuals) massed with others to produce the maximum in visual appeal. With an eye to the five basic elements of landscape design (color, scale, line, form and texture), Oakridge Landscape, Inc. skillfully arranges each bedding plant in relation to the accompanying annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. Using the flower selection tool you can filter specific flowers that meet your planting environment and browse pictures in the following resource.
