The CDC has now formally approved a booster dose for additional groups who have received the two-shot series of Moderna and those who have received the single dose of Johnson & Johnson. The booster dose of Moderna will be 1/2 the strength of the primary series whereas the Johnson & Johnson dose will remain the same strength. The CDC now recommends booster shots for all three vaccines for the following populations:

  • A booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine should be administered to the following groups at least 6 months after completing their Moderna or Pfizer primary series:

    • People aged 18-64 years at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and
transmission because of occupational or institutional setting. Occupations at
increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission include front line
essential workers and health care workers as detailed by the CDC:
      • First responders (healthcare workers, firefighters, police, congregate care
        staff)
      • Education staff (teachers, support staff, day care workers)
      • Food and agriculture workers
      • Manufacturing workers
      • Corrections workers
      • U.S. Postal Service workers
      • Public transit workers
      • Grocery Store Workers
  • A booster dose is also recommended for all of those 18 and older who were vaccinated with the Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine two or more months ago.
The CDC has also authorized mixing and matching the various COVID vaccines, i.e. if you received the primary series of Pfizer of J&J, you may receive a booster of Moderna. We recommend receiving Moderna as your booster dose regardless of which vaccine you first received, unless you are 25 or younger. If you are 25 or younger and fall into one of the above categories, please call your doctor for further guidance before receiving a booster dose.
