July 2011 E-News
"No country, however rich, can afford the waste of its human resources. Demoralization caused by vast unemployment is our greatest extravagance. Morally, it is the greatest menace to our social order. ... I stand or fall by my refusal to accept as a necessary condition of our future a permanent army of unemployed."
- Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 1934

Jaquelin graduated yesterday after a year in the program.  She starts orientation for her new full time job at a nursing home on Monday; she is also applying for part time work in retail.  Her mother attended her graduation and says she's seen her daughter become steady and independent in her year at Venice.  Daniel takes the GED on July 22.  He has done really well on practice tests, and tutor Wendell has him working on essays as the final hurdle to be ready for the test.

New trainees last month include Vernice, Tasha, and Ronald; all show great work ethic and flexibility.  Rachel, who also started last month, is on leave to address some housing issues before she can start training. Etta has moved to cashier (with a perfect register on her second solo night!) and Victoria and Ron have moved to cook station.

Our back office looks fantastic!  We have a new education area (Tebbe's Tutoring Corner") that makes it much easier to focus and learn; new office cubicles that make it easier for staff to concentrate and work, and new storage space to keep office and catering supplies organized.  We are deeply grateful to John Blake and his Miami University Architecture studio for their design and construction work; everything was completed from initial ideas to installation in less than a month. We also thank the Mayerson Summer Service Program for helping us prepare the space for construction, and Chris Flowers and his crew for rewiring computers and phones. Several new tutors have come on board to work in the new space.

Next up: the backyard and planters; a group from Starfire U along with our trainees and an urban gardening volunteer are going to take on the patches of weeds in our backyard and make pretty and useful herbs, flowers and veggies grow.

Deskey, Inc. is assisting us with a branding study to help us understand what our name(s) and messages mean to the community.  This is an important component of our strategic plan and we are so grateful for their help.

We recently received a gift of stock from a generous donor.  The gift was great in itself, and the fact that it was stock rather than cash required us to open up a brokerage account. Now that we have this mecchanism in place, it will be easy and financially favorable for future donors to give gifts this way.  If you are interested in donating stock, give us a call!

In the Venice Kitchen

- Venice on Vine enjoyed  a large number of  service groups over the summer including T.A.C.K.L.E (Archdiocese Teen program); Mayerson Summer Service Program; Jesuit Spiritual Center I-Plunge, Franciscans for the Poor, St. Vincent de Paul, and Homeless Coalition groups.  Our board members helped make the events entertaining and educational by hosting the groups and presenting information about employment issues and Power Inspires Progress.

- Try Meatless Mondays with our vegan and vegetarian menu, including pasta, soups, salads, hoagies and pizzas! Whether for dietary, ethical, environmental, taste or cost reasons, its easy to go meatless at Venice.

- A new volunteer is going to bring Venice Kitchen products out to area farmers markets.  We'll earn extra money, help our trainees practice selling skills and get out the word about our program.  If you can help by getting us referrals to some of the area markets, please give us a call or email.

- Try Deals that Give Back to get a coupon for $10 worth of Venice Pizza and Hoagies for just $5; you can also buy coupons for all kinds of foods and services.  Designate Power Inspires Progress to get the charitable donation that goes with each purchase.

- Our new, improved catering menu is posted online at: http://www.powerinspiresprogress.com/Catering.aspx
