"the common woman is as common as good bread
as common as when you couldn't go on but did.
For all the world we didn't know we held in common all along
the common is as common as the best of bread
and will rise
and will become strong--I swear it to you ...

Judy Grahn, "Common Woman Poems."

PIP NEWS

Annual Evaluation: On Oct 5, a group of seventeen PIP community members gathered to share ideas to improve PIP.

Trina in uniform

The group included volunteers, board members staff, alumni, and current trainees.  Following a format suggested by the Dominican Ministry Trust we picked two key criteria: Empowerment and Inclusiveness.  Working in small groups we discussed whether and how we meet these criteria and how we can do more.  Some of the examples from group notes on empowerment were:

  • Cook great food
  • Provide job training
  • Being a community
  • Interpersonal, Leadership, Communication skills
  • Problem solving
  • Being respectful to others
  • No job is beneath you
  • Take initiative
  • Take pride in work
  • Education Education Education
  • Build work ethic
  • Motivation
  • Source of references
  • Inspiration from others
  • Instill confidence & pride

To do more, we agreed to add a more formal alumni program, look into adult mentoring programs offered by other organizations, and hold quarterly trainee meetings to discuss issues and concerns.

New trainees this month include Jeremy, Daniel, Ebony and Kenyetta.  Several of our recent new trainees dropped out of the program due to child care issues-- relying on friends and family for daily babysitting is rarely sustainable long term, but sometimes it is difficult for parents to find other options that they trust. Ron has taken a leave to enroll in Easter Seals' Advanced Manufacturing training program.  Chavon will be seen with PIP Director Rina Saperstein on local cable TV in an In-Focus program about PIP.  Mark got top grades (Platinum!) in WorkKeys testing and will start advanced training in January.  Recent graduates Bridgette and Sharon are both working.

Deskey, Inc., a Cincinnati branding firm, will be presenting results of their study into PIP's identity, communication and brand to our board and stakeholders next week.  Deskey staff Sherwood MacVeigh, Amanda Matusak and Beth Nyman learned to know us better than we know ourselves, and are now teaching us how to communicate our goals and values more clearly.
