Duane and Vernice demonstrate the correct way to eat beignets at Mardi Gras.

Ebony and Derrick have taken promotions to "night lead." This means they are responsible for opening, smooth running and closing the restaurant on nights and mornings when Chef is not here. We've stayed at close to our full level of 19 trainees, so we only added one new trainee this month: Concetta, who brings a straightforward work ethic to our community.  Chavon is smoothly balancing being a full time student at Cincinnati State with being our "Kings Island" (all-round worker). Mark has taken on our special catering shift, helping Sr. Judy and Ryan with several large and formal catering events. Our senior trainee, Orville, has started back to school for his GED, while apartment hunting and working with his mentor on job search. Dominic is quickly learning cashier duties. Vernice and Christa are working on stripping away barriers to getting the jobs they want. They are planning to volunteer as a way to improve their credentials and experience in caring for challenged adults.
Fran Holthaus, a board member with the National Association for Adults with Special Learning Needs, spent last Saturday with us, teaching our tutors about ways to teach to four different learning styles: visual, auditory, sensory and kinetic.  Fran will be back to screen some of our trainees for learning and visual disabilities and to work with us some more.  Thanks to a grant from the Sisters of St. Joseph, we also were able to purchase the "Test of Adult Basic Education" and associated curriculum so that trainees and tutors will be better able to track their educational progress.
One of the month's highlights for me was a call from recent graduate Alecia, who wanted us to know that she was sitting on campus at Cincinnati State, waiting to start her class.  Alecia worked hard to pass her GED in December, and now she's achieving her dream of attending college!
Our Board of Directors has completed annual planning and has established committees for governance, finance, fundraising, business and program.  If you'd like to volunteer on a committee, please get in touch.
Congratulations to our partner, the Miami University Center for Community Engagement, which is celebrating its tenth birthday this week.
PIP thanks the Spaulding Foundation for a program support grant in 2012!

Venice Business
Anthony serving the CMSTEP Montessori Group

Venice on Vine served several large groups including the Montessori Teachers CMSTEP program, and Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy.  We updated our menu to show our pastas and soups, and got a great review from a food blogger.

Venice Catering continues to seek manageable ways to expand.  We have more business than we can handle and would like more storage and prep space so that we can take on additional trainees and customers.

Venice Kitchen is selling chocolates handcrafted by Sr. Bonnie Steinlage to support Franciscan Haircuts from the Heart.  Our Hearty Bean Soup mix ($6.50) makes a great Lenten meal.
