Randy, thank you so much for your patience this evening. Please forgive my litany of questions, it's just who I am. The search for a correct fit for us and our horses has been an interesting plethora of horse trainers. I hope to gather a seriously committed group of 5 or 6 who want to further their horse education such as we do. Getting that commitment is easier said than done, however, I have a great report to deliver regarding your abilities and how your horses in training handle. Hats off to ya Randy, I was really impressed by the soft feel of that black Arab!! Very very nice!! And that red girl, why she is an exquisite, petite, and elevated little mover! Well done mister cowboy man that posts English style!! You truly have a nice handle on those Arab girls!! I would really like to bring a friend(s) to observe your talents. Is that something you would acquiesce to? Have a great evening/weekend.
Thanks again for your patience and amiable personality!!

Dear Subscriber,
With a two trips into the back country with clients, a new training demo video release, a full load of clinics, 10 days in Moses Lake and Spokane, and a colt challenge, it has been a busy month.
In the next few months, we will be producing our first full length training DVD due out some time in November. This will be about 60min ground DVD that will help build softness under saddle through a set of 8 exercises from the ground. It will have problem solving as well as needed concepts to deal with issues that come up from time to time.
Yes, Carbon is coming along nicely. You guys will be seeing more of him in the coming DVDs and demos next year. Now that he has made his debut, you will see more pictures on the web site. He's the "Rock Star" |

Working With Fjords |
|

Making a gentleman out of a "STALLION" with mares
This was my first real opportunity to work with Fjords. This is a fantastic breed!
I got a call one morning from Ronnie Zieserl (lead trainer for Olivia Farms.com in Ford Washington) asking if I would work with a Fjord stallion (Tico) because they wanted to get his gold medallion in Dressage. “I asked what are the issues” and Ronnie said: “when he gets in the show ring with other studs and mares he loses it mentally”.
When I showed up in Ford Washington and saw about 30 clones, I about lost my mind. The first thing I ask was "how do you tell them apart"? |
|
What makes this breed outstanding and special is their personality and disposition. They are slow thinkers like QH and they have confidence that is unlike any other breed that I have come across. They can do anything you want them to do because the have big hearts and lots of try.
I get calls all the time from 40 and 50 something women that have been out of horse for 20 plus years. What makes Fjords a great breed is that they are small, calm, and have big bone to haul those extra lbs we have put on over the years. Once you take the time to ride them and be with them, you will know what I am talking about. They are fun to be with and they will turn the heads of anyone you ride pasted.
|
So how did I approach the issues with Tico? Like with any horse, I establish leadership through moving and controlling their feet. I started on the ground then move to the saddle. The nice thing was I had a herd of mares to work with. I put Tico in the paddock with about four mares ready to kill him. After about 3 days, he figured it was best to leave them alone when I was on the ground or under saddle with him.
After making some attitude changes, I help the crew at Olivia Farm reinforce the cues to develop and maintain the good behavior that we wanted. A week later, I found myself at the show at Moses Lake surrounded by more clones than I could count. |
|
How did things work out at the show?
We got his medallion and rode him bridleless at the show.

| KSC "Colt Starting Challenge" |
|
August 22 & 23 2009 3rd annual "Colt Starting Challenge"

- This year's challengers were:
-
- Randy Byers, John Lyons Certified
-
- Evan Bonner, Parelli Certified
-
- Jamie Thomas, Winner of Extreme Mustang Run
The Challenge started off each day with two exciting hours with the trainers working side by side in separate round pens using their own style of training to soften, educate, saddle, and start a young or unbroken horse.
Following the horse starting challenge on both days were demonstrations and educational seminars; vendors were also present to help you with horse needs.
Saturday:
Jamie got first pick followed by Randy, then Evan rounded the the third choice.
Jamie's mare was very willing and needed very little encouragement to get the little mare to move forward. Evan's gelding had a real problem working through a bucking issues, while Randy was working with a lazy couch potato. Randy spent most of the first hour just getting the horse to unlock it's feet from the ground. After 30 minutes, Randy was the first on riding his horse followed by Evan, then Jamie. Randy had to quit his horse after about an 1 1/2hr because she just could not handle the pace of the challenge.
In the afternoon Carbon,(Randy's new demo horse) showed off his strait line lead changes and canter half-pass to Toby Keith "American Ride" finished it off with a bow.
Jamie showed off her mustang in a trail obstacle course, and Evan did a full liberty demo with his mare.
Sunday:
After 2hrs of training, The horses and trainers were ready to see who could manage the the obstacle course. Randy went first followed by Evan then Jamie. Randy struggled with the bridge crossing, but did well with the rest of the course. Evan did well, but Jamie shined with her very willing mare. When it came to the free style part, Randy went through the course again with just a halter and lead rope bare back. His mare did better the second time through.
Hats off to Lisa Soete, Kitsap Saddle Club, and the challengers!
Yes Jamie Thomas was the winner! Good job Jamie! |
| "Trail Ride With Clients" |

Susan Roswold is still on cloud 9 after her ride with me up on the PCT near "Old Snowy"

We left the barn around 8am for a day ride on 9/3/2009. It was one of those nice days between storm systems. We could see Mt Rainier and Mt Adam, and Mt Saint Hellens, but there were lot of clouds in the way.
This was a great day to take Jolie (a clients horse) out for a test drive after a month in the arena. As you can see yes, it's September and there is still snow in at 6,000ft on the Packwood Glacier. As you can see this little mare is going to make Karin McKee a happy camper with a great trail horse.
Put your horse in training and you can go for rides like this with me. |
