Dear Subscriber
For immediate release.
After 4 months of giving lessons, training horse, mucking out stalls, doing clinics, and staying up until 2am on many nights, we had some time to build the ultimate training aid. "iHorseTrainer" has just been released in the iTunes App Store.
"How did it get built"?
About 2 years ago, I got an idea from Mary Majetich and Josh Lyons. There had to be a better way to take your training DVD s into the arena to watch them as you work on an exercise with your horse. Mary had bought a set of videos from a well known trainer. She would watch them at night and then run out to the barn
the next day only
to forget the exercise that
she needed to work on. (has that happened to you?)
She went out and bough a small portable DVD player and got the job done.
It wasn't until 8 months ago when I bought my iPhone that I realized what a great platform Apple had developed for the (equine) industry. As I poked around the app store, at that time, there was only one app that was related to training a horses. I could not believe my eyes, there was real opportunity for a quality training app.
I set out on a mission. I spent the next month doing a little research to see if I could find out how to build an iPhone app. I got quotes starting at $10,000 right up to $20,000 and that did not include producing video. There just was no way I could drop $10k on this project. At that time, I was planning my first ground training DVD, but realized that there was a better way to help people with their horses, but I did not have the resources to complete the app.
I started to watch YouTube videos and saw several 13 year old kids making iPhone apps. I looked around and every thing I read said it was easy to build. I said to myself, ""I built a website, "I can do this"". I needed to buy a mac first, then download the SDK, pay the $100 to Apple, and the next thing I knew I was one of 250,000 iPhone developers. After spending another $200 on books, watching more YouTube videos, reading blogs, I found myself many times fast asleep in the chair from reading about Objective-C programing. I realized I was out of my league here, after all, I am a horse trainer not a computer programmer.
I just could not give up. This was a big opportunity I could not pass up. I befriended a semi-retired doctor in Atlanta Georgia (JL Software) that was building his own apps for prenatal care. The next thing I knew, I had a working app. I filled the app with video, text, and images that I had laying around. I then started to test the app with my lesson students to get feed back.
I set out to save myself $10,000 by doing it myself, but only found myself spending it anyway. To say the least, this was not an easy project to complete, but well worth it if I can help bring you closer to your horse. We will also be doing free updates to add more video and content. We plan on releasing 5 more apps, a Dressage app, trail riding app and an advanced riding app later on this year.
I raised my expectations, will you?
We have a new theme this year!
