Persimmon Seeds Predict a Snowy Winter |

If you don't live in Minnesota or other cold-winter parts of North America or Europe, the reading of persimmon seeds may seem a little "corny," and the Farmer's Almanac is just another bedtime fairytale. Around here, though, winter weather is serious business and those who are prepared fare much better.
So....gas up the snowmobile, fit the kids with warm boots, mittens and sleds, and get ready for the white stuff because the Farmer's Almanac reports that the split persimmon seeds reveal spoon shapes--a fairly reliable sign of a snowy winter.

The persimmon tree is not native to Minnesota, but Melissa Bunker from Johnsonville, NC has been keeping track of how closely the images seen in split persimmon seeds correlate with the general winter forecast in the US, and bloggers report that she's been correct for at least the past two years. Folks from Tennessee, Illinois and North and South Carolina are reporting the same seed results, so the winter of 2011/2012 is worth watching.
Other possible shapes are knives (suggesting cold and ice) and forks (sign of a mild winter). I suspect many on the east coast and the Great Lakes area are hoping for more "fork-like" weather, but it may not be a bad idea to get that snowblower tuned up--just in case...

Lars Sigurdsen is the wealthiest man in Ole and Lena's home town. The local banker was surprised when Lars came into the bank and asked to borrow $10. The bank required collateral, so Lars left $650,000 worth of negotiable securities to secure the $10 loan. A year later, Lars came back and repaid the $10, plus 80 cents interest. The banker gave him back the negotiable securities and said, "This is none of my business, but why would a man in your financial position want to borrow $10?" Lars answered, "That's easy...where else can you get a safe deposit box for only 80 cents a year?"
