About the Workshop

The cornerstone of sustainability is behavior change. Sustainability requires individuals and businesses to act (e.g., reduce waste, increase water and energy efficiency, alter transportation habits, etc.). To date, most programs to achieve these changes have relied upon disseminating information. Research demonstrates, however, that simply providing information has little or no effect on what people or businesses do. But if not ads, brochures or booklets, then what? Over the last decade a new approach, community-based social marketing, has emerged as an effective alternative for promoting sustainable behavior. We invite you to attend a workshop with the founder of community-based social marketing, Dr. Doug McKenzie-Mohr, as the training provided will fundamentally change the way you think about program delivery.

Introductory Workshop (May 13)

This one-day workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to community-based social marketing and how it is being applied throughout the world to foster sustainable behavior. Those who attend the workshop will learn the five steps of community-based social marketing (selecting behaviors, identifying barriers, developing strategies, conducting pilots, and broad scale implementation) and be exposed to numerous case studies illustrating its use. As such, this workshop provides an in-depth exposure to community-based social marketing and provides participants with the knowledge they need to design and evaluate their own community-based social marketing programs. At the end of the workshop participants will have acquired sufficient knowledge to use community-based social marketing to develop successful programs to foster sustainable behavior.

Advanced Workshop (May 14-15)

Offered for just the first time in Hawaii, this two-day advanced workshop provides an in-depth exploration of how community-based social marketing can be used to foster sustainable behavior. The session will introduce leading-edge material on selecting behaviours, identifying barriers and benefits (including selecting samples, survey development, and market segmentation), applying behaviour change tools (including some exciting new developments regarding habit formation and the use of commitments, norms, communication and goal setting), and piloting programs. Further, participants will also be coached in making community-based social marketing presentations to their agency or community and will receive PowerPoint and Keynote presentations for this purpose. Attendees in the advanced community-based social marketing workshop must have previously attended an introductory workshop with Dr. McKenzie-Mohr (if you have not previously attended the introductory workshop, you can attend the introduction on on May 13 and then attend the advanced workshop).

Who Should Attend?

If you design or fund programs to encourage individuals or businesses to engage in environmentally beneficial behaviors such as those involved in waste reduction, water and energy efficiency, watershed protection, pollution prevention or transportation changes you will find these workshops invaluable. The workshops will also be useful for environmental education professionals who work in settings such as zoos, aquariums and parks. Public health professionals who work to foster active lifestyles will also benefit from attending.
