The Living Building Challenge is a philosophy, and advocacy tool, and certification program that defines the highest possible level of environmental performance, envisioning a built environment that is fully integrated with its ecosystem. It can be applied to development at all scales, from buildings – both new construction and renovation, to infrastructure, landscapes and neighborhoods. Living Building Challenge Collaboratives are community-based, in-person groups of Ambassadors that come together to advance community transformation by creating the local conditions that support development of Living Buildings, Sites and Communities.

The Honolulu Collaborative is the local Chapter of the International Living Futures Institute (ILFI), the organization behind the Living Building Challenge. It is a hui of local practitioners, policy makers, and technical experts that are committed to investigating and creating opportunities to achieve Living Building Challenge projects in Hawaii. The KYA Sustainability Studio are trained ILFI Ambassadors and facilitators behind the Honolulu Collaborative. Each quarter the Studio will host a Honolulu Collaborative meeting featuring local experts that highlight a different "petal" or category (e.g. Site, Water, Materials, Health, etc.). The Honolulu Collaborative will periodically feature event updates, local petal expert links and bios, and other insights on our Honolulu Collaborative Facebook Page--"Like Us" us to stay informed!
