The American Academy o f Audiology asked us to speak at their annual convention in San Diego in April. We presented a Featured Session to a group of about 200. That was especially impressive since our talk was at 8:30 in the morning on a Saturday. Audiologists are a dedicated and sturdy lot! Here were are, fortifying ourselves with Starbucks coffee before the main event.
We invited two old friends/associates to join us on the podium: Alan Desmond, our dizziness blo gger from West Virginia (shown below with Holly and Sharon), and Judy Huch, our Tucson colleague (not shown).
Our assigned topic was Buying and Selling Audiology Practices. We collected data in a national survey conducted with the support of The Hearing Journal (headquarters, NYC). The most interesting findings that emerged from the survey were that audiologists who bought practices were HAPPY (over 80% would "do it again") but audiologists who sold practices were NOT happy (over 50% "would not do it again.").
A close look revealed that unhappy audiologists missed their daily work and their patients. We're not surprised -- Sharon and I wouldn't have come back were it not for the joy we get from working with our new and long-time patients. We've known some of you for over 20 years and two generations. Money just can't buy that human factor!
