When & why did you begin bass fishing? Started bass fishing at 14 by myself on a nearby lake. I just enjoyed it. My daddy didn’t bass fish. All he did was catfish. I actually taught him how later. I started fishing competitive when I went to work at a Ranger dealership called Bo’s Marine. Bo had won the Classic and was the leading money winner in BASS at that time and he wanted me to fish tournament locally to get to know the local fisherman.
What has been your most memorable moment when it comes to fishing so far? I have been fortunate to have several good moments in fishing. My son likes hunting more than fishing, but he has fished some circuits and open team tournaments with me and we have won several. Winning these with him is probably the best.
Biggest catch; when, where & how: Biggest catch in a tournament was on Cross Lake in Shreveport, La. I had never been there. I was a shoe in to make the championship so I didn’t go practice. I showed up that morning and didn’t realize I had to have a permit. I didn’t get a permit till 8:00 am. They then let me start fishing. The lake has scattered cypress around the bank and all 80 boat were pounding them. As I was looking at the lake I noticed a few scattered cypress and other objects (such as duck blinds) out in the middle of the lake. There was no pressure there so I fished a jig around them and was back at the landing a hour early with 5 fish weighing 27 ½ lbs. It was the record on the lake at that time and I think it still is.
Do you have a good luck charm or certain thing you do when it comes to fishing? If so, what is it? I do not have a lucky charm or anything. The only thing I do every tournament is while we are setting in the boats waiting for take off I will say a prayer and in that prayer I will ask that the good Lord will let me fish to the best of my ability that day. The only other thing I do is mentally. The tournament to me is not against other fishermen it’s against the fish, so hearing this guy or that guy is catching fish will not bother me. If I figure out the fish I have as good a chance of winning as anyone.
Name someone who is a hero to you & would like to meet someday? The one person I admired in fishing would be Denny Breyer (spelled wrong I know) my style of fishing is like his. Plus I like the way he presents himself.
What would it mean to you to win the 2010 TBFNC in Knoxville, TN? To win this would mean everything to me. Bass fishing has been very good to me. I have been fortunate to win a lot of tournaments in my fishing career. I have won in BFL, strong finishes in Stren Series, and Opens. To me it’s a personal thing; I have a good reputation in my area among family, friends and others in tournament fishing, not only in winning but also how honorably you go about it. To me this means everything. I would love to fish the tour or Stren. When I have fished Stren in the past I have been lucky to get 2 days practice where others practiced 5 or 6 days. I would like to do it on a even playing field to see how I stack up against the best. Winning this would do that.
overnight.
