TBF RI Members Helping to Save Trapped Trout in Flooded Hatchery

The spring rains and flooding that took place in Rhode Island wreaked havoc on the local hatchery in Carolina, Rhode Island. The Hatchery is known as the Carolina Trout Hatchery where they also raise some warm water species, such as bass, there also.

When the flood waters set in, a pond holding 30,000 trout overflowed and sent the majority of these fish, ranging from 14" in length to 4 lbs, into a black bass holding pond where they became trapped when the water receded.

This new resting place for them is not a big impoundment and these fish are in eminent danger of dying as the summer temperatures elevate the holding ponds water temperatures into the 70s and higher, which will most certainly kill all 30,000 of these trout.

If that happens, the resulting stench, bacteria and elevated ammonia concentrations from the dying fish threaten to wipe out this entire hatchery and portions of the river system below.

To the rescue come TBF members Mike Broggi and his associates along with TBF Partner, Pure Fishing and Berkley Powerbaits. The Rhode Island Federation heard of the dilemma and have organized three "Fish Out Days" where they would go in and catch as many trout as they possibly can and [10525] relocate them to another holding pond. Their first attempt was on a smaller scale, with only a handful of anglers who caught and saved approximately 300 fish in the first afternoon!

They are now gearing up for a mass "Fish Out", where they hope to bring in a host of TBF anglers and other volunteers to catch and transport as many of the trout from this pond as possible. Mike Broggi estimates that they will have between 100 and up to as many as 200 anglers involved in the next effort, which will take place on June 2nd.

A follow up event will take place one week later on June 9th if necessary.

The TBF and their partner, Berkley Powerbaits, are aiding in the efforts by supplying cases of Berkley Power Nuggets and able body anglers to help with the efforts.

Hopefully the anglers can remove and transport enough of the wayward trout to preserve the bulk of the 30,000 fish and also save the black bass population and the rest of the hatchery system in the process.

Stay tuned for the results as Mike and his crew gets after them in Rhode Island!
